What makes a good con report??

20 posts in this topic

After each comic convention around the country, several people give their impressions on the events that transpired during the convention that they experienced. Some people focus on activities that happened in a chronological manner. Others report on comics that they felt others might be interested in. Still others like to mention who they saw and what they got from the convention.

So as you guys read the con reports, what type of things do you enjoy reading? What types of stuff would you want to read more about?

I post this so that others can think about what the forum wants to read in con reports, so that the writer can focus on those types of things.

Additionally, what types of pictures do like to see from a con??

I like to hear about the general buzz of the Con, and what deals and acquisitions were to be had. After all, that's why most of us go to Cons, although socializing is almost as important.

Apart from that, conversations with important artists or writers, and of course who attended the Forum dinner, assuming there was one.

I write 'em the way I like to read them -- in nauseatingly extensive detail and with a bunch of personal observations that few people actually care about. And a few digs at my buddies just to see if they're paying attention. poke2.gif

In terms of topics, it`s all good. I like hearing about comics that were available, deals that were done, who was there, and the news/rumors going around. Some write better than others, but it`s all good.

In terms of pix, I always like to see pictures of dealers, prominent collectors and forum members (with names, please) to help me in linking faces with names. Despite collecting for over 20 years, I`ve met very few dealers or collectors in person. Pix of hot babes at the cons are never bad either...

The main reason I have written my con reports is for my own enjoyment, not really for others. Although I want people to enjoy them, I really do it to relive the experience as I write. I'm not writing them for a publisher or editor to be sold in a magazine so I'm not too worried about what others think.

Pictures and/or scans of original art, comics, forum members and under dressed women. Mostly the last one.

Both you and FFB as well as myself have mentioned that you appreciate the underdressed chicks at the cons. But whenever this subject is brought up in Comics General there are guys coming out of the woodwork complaining about it (inappropriate for children, no place in comic con, etc. 893blahblah.gif). I'm glad to see some of us stating that it is part of what we really like to see, even if it is just in pictures. LONG LIVE THE CONVENTION BIMBOS!!!! 893applaud-thumb.gifdevil.gif

I said this? In public?

Actually, I don't mind all of the punani at the shows. I wish they'd sequester them to a back area where kids don't walk around though. If I were walking a child through a comic convention, I wouldn't want one of the first things that he sees daddy buy to be a glossy 8X10 of daddy's favorite porn star, Asia Carerra.

Sid, there's a big difference between a bunch of presumably adult men saying on these boards that as long as there were scantily-clad women at the con, we'd like to see the pix, and the same men saying that that means they approve of porn being pushed at cons, usually involving the promotional efforts of said scantily-clad women, particularly where there are children around.

If the porn and the bimbos are a necessary part of cons to make them financially viable, then so be it, but I agree with Scott that they should at least be segregated to a back area, preferably with walls or curtains around the area so only those who affirmatively want to see the sights will be able to see them.

Sorry Scott, I mentioned the wrong person, it was tth2 (in above post) that mentioned this, not you. Although this is the point of view of a non-parent, I really don't see the harm in a kid seeing a scantily clad babe in a con or a brief look at some boobies in a picture (assuming it is a quick walk by). They see almost this much at the beach all day long.

Sid (and I don`t want this to turn into a rehash of an earlier thread so this will be my last statement on this topic), it`s all about context. Being scantily clad at a con, particularly in connection with the promotion of porn, is all about titillation, sex and promoting sex. While of course swimwear has an element of sexuality to it, and is even often designed to be titillating, there is not the same overt promotion of sex and intentional stimulation of prurient interests, even when people are going topless. Sorry, but it`s just different in my mind. confused-smiley-013.gif

I respect your opinion Tim as well as other fathers here, but I have always thought that as Americans we make too much of a big deal about nudity and sexuality. Sure, there is a limit to what kids should be exposed to. But a casual walk by of a group of con babes with maybe a few naked booby photos in front, to me is a non-issue. I'd rather keep my kids (if I had any) away from all the gratuitous violence depicted EVERYWHERE at conventions. In that instance, we Americans are too accepting.
