Does Artist/Writer signature help or hurt book's value

I am heading to Baltimore CC, and wanted to ask the group:

Is it worth having a book signed by artist/writer?  Does it help the book's value, or detract from it?  Also, If it does help value, should be submitted for a signature series label/grade?

There are a lot of variables involved. It depends on the comic, the comic grade and the creators signing it. You will get better answers if you tell us what the comic or comics are and the names of the creators.

Jerkfro's response is good.

IMO, most books pre-Modern (before ~1975) are more valuable unsigned. That's a personal opinion of mine, and the market may disagree. Also IMO, any Modern books you get signed, you should 100% get them witnessed and slabbed by CGC.

You may not intend on selling any signed books in the future, but if you have to, the Signature Series books will have no question about their validity as long as there is no tampering with the encapsulation.

There's gonna be a lot of varying opinions, but the truth is it varies by book, by creator, by grade of book, by your own preferences about money, opportunity cost, your own geography, the way you sell, everything.  And the math of the of the situation, always the math.

For example.  99% of copper modern comics can be bought for $1 or less at this point, even in Near Mint.  If you get a FREE sig from a creator.  Maybe you can now sell it for $1.50 or $2.  BUT if you paid $30 for CGC SS and it graded anything LESS than 9.8 (and many times even in 9.8), 99% of the time you break even or LOSE money when you cell that comic.  Now of course there are plenty of exceptions, but even those exceptions are each unique situations with a million variables.

And for older books, it might be different.  If you had a RAW 9.8 Swamp Thing 1 signed by Berni Wrightston, that would almost certainly LOWER the value of the book versus and unsigned RAW or Graded 9.8 Swamp Thing 1.  BUT the a Swamp Thing 1 RAW in VG signed by Berni Wrightson would probably see a price boost.  The graded VG signed by Wrightson would probably also see a price boost, but maybe not enough to cover the cost of grading (which also includes shipping, insurance, opportunity cost, time value of money, etc).
