Paid a visit to the UK's Atkinson Gallery in Southport yesterday to view the exhibition of Frank Hampson artworks currently being staged up until March 2019.  Hampson created 'Dan Dare, Pilot of the Future' for EAGLE magazine back in 1950 (which some American collectors will be aware of).  He mostly produced fully-painted artwork, with the 1955 - 1960 period showcasing his best work (the earlier strips are very good also).  Here's a selection of photographs I took from my visit.  Excuse the odd camera angles . . . all the artworks are behind glass and it was difficult trying to get compositions that eliminated flash reflection . . .

Dan Dare, 'The Man From Nowhere', episode 8 page 2,  (1955).  Interesting original, this one.  For a very short period, Hampson tried experimenting with production methods.  Instead of painting this particular page in full, he created a pen & ink original, from which he printed a copy to be coloured separately.  He didn't like the results so quickly reverted back to full-painted original art.

Dan Dare, 'Rogue Planet' episode 3 pages 1 & 2 (1955), a combination of Frank Hampson and Don Harley finished art.  The original artworks were re-structured for a 1960s reprint, eliminating parts of the art used for the first printing.

Selection of 1950/51 artworks from the very first Dan Dare story.  The work, although good, had not yet hit its stride and the results can be variable in quality.  Hampson had a studio of assistants, so the work showcased here will feature various artistic contributions. . .
