I seem to remember you saying within the last month that you're a Wizard guy and never use Overstreet and that you didn't realize so many people did until recently.

Thanks FF...I read Wizard and like to "champion" the underdog as it is often treated within this forum with as much respect as a tabloid newspaper would be. I also read CBG and Overstreet. I did not become aware of the Overstreet guide's potential as a comic resource until I seriously started selling and buying comics for other than my personal enjoyment. Then coming onto this forum, many spoke about it and I had to check it out for myself. I'm glad I did. I knocked it for its static and somewhat outdated prices for Modern comics. Even if Wizard was hypeing up books by raising prices across the board (see Uncanny X-men in this month's Wizard), the other prices for Modern books like the Top Cow stuff and Ultimate line were trading online and at the retail stores around the Wizard guide price. The 2003 Overstreet Grading Guide is the absolute tops and I've never had any issue with using it or recommending it to other sellers on eBay, especially the ones slightly off on their grading and needed a "refresher". I'm glad that we have different publications available to the comic community. I totally agree with arnoldt that it would be better to gather information by reviewing input from different sources rather than tasking one as the sole source for an overwhelming magnitude of topics. grin.gif

Well I wouldn't say that it's an impossibility for someone to be just as well versed in the Modern market as well as the Silver and others. There's plenty of super high feedback seller-only eBay ppl. I'm just curious what decision goes into this and if all options are weighed. If you think about it, it's a pretty big deal. Each person represents what they believe the market is, if they have no clue about it..they could just be swayed by some BS and provide some bad feedback. That's just one person, now think if over the years you get a couple more of these while the old dealers retire and move on. You won't really have an accurate representation at all, you'll just have someone's uneducated (in the overall comic market, not talking about intelligence) stab at it.

On a more serious note, I'm not real sure how to take this bit of news. It's nice for Darth but I'm not sure how nice it is for everyone else. No offense to you Darth but even you have said you don't know much about comics before Bronze.

I was born in 1974 and read my first comic in 1978, so my field of familiarity and input would probably be focused on Modern/Ultimate Age?

You'd really think Overstreet would search for a person with a more universal knowledge then just one specific niche.

Is there such a person? The Ultimate Advisor! Knows Platinum Age thru Ultimate age? This would probably be impossible to find. Even with the forum members on this board, some like to focus their time, other than the common ground forums, in the Silver, Bronze, or Modern forums? Some have time to browse all but most can distinguish which forum they post most of their informative replies in.

Especially considering new comics are such a small portion of the reason for a person to buy Overstreet.

Let's hope we can change that. Maybe I can help, along with others, to bring more importance and attention to the new comics in the OS Review and Guide?

It certainly doesn't make me too sure of their selections for Advisor but maybe he's just being used as a Modern specialist.

I feel fully confident that I can accomplish what was asked of me.

That might make sense but for Darth to be doing some stuff with Silver or other things outside of his true knowledge base seems a bit of a bad move.

All this means is that I'll have to broaden my horizons and learn as we go along concerining other genres that are not my main focus. It will be an interesting journey. We'll see how this all progresses in time. grin.gif

Can you elaborate on this point?

Yes smile.gif

See, this is the kind of stuff that scares me!

There will be no room for DC in the future...only Marvel Manga! Especially Namor and his sequined green thongs...so learn to love it, FOGIE! tongue.gif

Oh man, don't get me started on the Marvel Manga and all their American psudeo-manga artists! Joe Mad was the worst X-Men artist ever! Have you seen the new Human Torch book??? mad.gif

But what will you be doing for Overstreet? Reporting sale prices? I could do that by checking your ended auctions. Or does Overstreet need the info from the person that actually sold the book, to confirm the sale went through?

All joking and ribbing aside tongue.gif , congrats Darth on the apointment. I guess this means Overstreet will be seriously revising its prices on modern books or are you to be involved in the new update publication?

ROFL!

This lil' story came to mind because one of my brother's friends had to do this for some Frat initiation

On a more serious note laugh.gif

My first year playing junior b hockey, I had a race with two other rookies. Although there was no skill other than running your [!@#%^&^] off, or props like grapes involved, imagine running a full mile in -30 degrees weather in the dead of winter; 1:00 in the morning; pitch black, did I mention in the dead of winter, and then getting tripped about 3/4 of the way by the team captain who was wielding a (black) taped-up hockey stick, and hiding behind some bushes. I managed to regain my balance, but I can't say the same for everyone-- one guy ended-up tripping and sliding on a long patch of ice that ran into a lake which hadn't quite frozen near the shore. The craziest part of the story is that even though we managed to get him out of the water within minutes of him falling in, he ended-up getting a really bad case of frostbite because when we went back to the hotel room, all the doors were locked, and no one opened the door to any of the rooms - that is until the coach heard our frostbitten friend screaming and yelling and decided to come out about a half-hour later to check out what all the comotion was about. frown.gif

Sometimes I get the impression that some people believe the Overstreet Advisor thing is a rigidly defined set of criteria and that parties who become Advisors must "qualify" and then report a specific set of data on every conceivable area of comic book collecting, for which they are issued an Advisor pin, Certificate of Advisorship and access to the vast Overstreet database of prices.

When I think about things like that, I can't help but grin. laugh.gif But why spoil all the fun of speculation...

Nah Arnold, we already know it's just an invitation to a weekly Beer and Natchos party, where the Advisors bring in their list of hoarded issues, and concoct even more unfounded price increases.

Now that Darth is part of the gang, I can see Modern's selling for even lower percentages of Guide. grin.gif
