Is that what you're saying? Do you think he does a lot of business from unknowing gift givers? Do you think he can support his business fleecing these people? kav
Any collector of anything needs to firmly tell their spouse do not I repeat do not attempt to buy me a collectible-unless you understand the hobby fully you can get screwed over beyond belief or just get absolutely the wrong thing. My mom bless her soul was always buying me art supplies. I told her over and over not to do that. tv horror, ThothAmon and FineCollector

Just have a read through this and tell me Church (Or his heirs) didn't get royally screwed by Chuck. He cleared out the house using 'chicken boxes' that held 300-400 books per box, he paid on a per box basis, and he dealt with an estate agent who's only concern was having the house emptied. The truth will never be known as to how much exactly was paid but I'll hazard guess and say it was way less than 5k. And how much has he made off them? He's a multi millionaire. He's also a scumbag! http://www.milehighcomics.com/tales/cbg12.html

He's also a scumbag! http://www.milehighcomics.com/tales/cbg12.html I read it as it was being published, and have re-read it multiple times since. Church did not get "royally screwed" by Chuck. You are judging Chuck from a 2019 perspective; in 1977, the situation was completely different. Chuck didn't steal the books; he paid what Edgar's children thought was acceptable. If the report is true, Edgar's children were in the process of throwing Edgar's books out, and had already called at least one other local dealer who turned them down. If that's the case, anything that Chuck paid them would have been more than they were expecting. 1977 was still an era where people were routinely throwing comic books away. "Bagging and boarding" was still a new concept. I have little doubt, knowing what I know about the people in my life, that those comics were looked at with scorn and contempt by his family, and they were happy to get rid of them. My family has treated my comics with scorn and contempt, unnecessarily taking up space, and that's in the era where "everybody knows" old comics aren't worthless. What turned out to be more important: the price Chuck paid, or the potential rescue of the greatest comic collection ever known, the vast majority of which is "finest known"...often by a LOT? What if Chuck hadn't been able to secure the money for the purchase? What would have happened to those books? Do you know...? Chuck wasn't under any obligation to reveal his version of events to anyone. Is the story embellished? Almost certainly. But is the general gist of the events correct? Again, almost certainly. And how much has he made off them? That's nobody's business but Chuck's, but it can very safely be said that Chuck's buyers have made a hell of a lot more than he did. And how do you know how much money Chuck has, and how is it any of your business? "Scumbag"...? Do not let envy and greed lead you to judge someone else based on a flawed perspective. BabaLament
Theft sucks, regardless of whom it happens to. I don't deal with MHC often because I'd have to rob a bank to do serious shopping there, and I don't really have the skill set for all that. However, when I have called them up looking for a particular item, the staff have always been courteous. I disagree with his pricing structure, but its his business, he'll run it how he sees fit; and its not like I don't have a zillion other shops where I can take my business if (when) I feel he is grossly overestimating the value of his merchandise. Regardless of my opinion of his business methodology, I don't want any of us, collectors or retailers, to be robbed, injured, etc.; while our collections/inventories are a significant part of our lives/livelihood, its not worth being hurt or killed over. Though if the criminal who cut himself robbing MHC turns around and sues Chuck because he was injured during the incident, I may laugh just a little bit at the absurdity. mec3437
