Extra credit if you can name who became baseball's first Million Dollar Man!

Nolan Ryan

Although Nolan Ryan is indeed acknowledged to be baseball's first Million Dollar Man, I find this to be a bit strange since I thought Dave Parker had already signed his multi-million dollar multi-year contract earlier that same year back in 1979?  ???

OT: In last week's HA, a poor, incomplete copy of Fantastic Comics 20 sold for $576? WTH? I know most issues of that title have been very hard to find for a long time, but still....SMH.

I think you answered your own question. People can make up any excuse they want on why they did or didn't pull the trigger on a book. But at the end of the day, either you own the book or you don't. That Fantastic Comics 20 only has 9 copies on the census, if I collected that title and saw that book I would over pay for it to and hope to upgrade later lol.

I understand where you're coming from, @twmjr1. I've never wanted a book badly enough to buy an incomplete copy.

And @Nazirite, if you own an incomplete copy, you don't own the book. You own part of the book.

In your opinion sure, even if that was the case , having only part of the book that you want still beats the heck out of not having it at all, especially when it comes to golden age books.  :baiting:

Yes, you are indeed correct as I just Goggled it and although Dave Parker did signed a 5-year $5M contract back in January of 1979, the deal was actually made up of a $650K base per year, with the rest comprised of deferred payments and incentives with posssibly some of them unearned.  :(

So yes, Nolan Ryan was the first million dollar player as the his contract starting for the 1980 season at 4 years for $4.5M was not laced with either deferred payments or incentives.  (thumbsu

One the one hand this book has been undervalued for far too long, but on the other hand...this is silly: Cover is detached and it is MISSING ALL 5 PAGES OF THE SANDMAN STORY.

I'm assuming most of the value here is in the cover, as that is a very nice sticker and overall clean wrap that could be used to upgrade another complete copy.

This copy seemed to have a lot going for it despite the missing pages... super bright clean cover, signed by Jerry Robinson and from his collection.

I guess there's a new Disney mega-key in town. Who knew?

Overstreet 9.2 value = $190.

Insane, completely INSANE! What is wrong with people? Prices like this are good for the hobby? No, people are and will be leaving for good. Then what happens to people like this buyer?

That just shows you that people with money an No comic brain are buying books in the 9.0 range and above thinking it's a great investment :makepoint:

Someone seems to be going hard for highest-graded Four Color books. Maybe someone should tell him that the only reason some of those books look scarce in the census is because most people haven't considered them valuable enough to slab.

I think this going to be the first litmus test of how high end books are doing while crypto and the nasdaq crashes.  I'm not putting in any tracking bids as I won't be able to afford it at any price
