That's gotta be a photo artifact; probably a trade-off necessary to get that level of color-pop. The first image (9.0) has an almost pastel appearance without any apparent dust shadow. The second (9.8) has a warmer appearance, leaning toward yellow.  In hand, this book would probably fall somewhere between these two images, but that's just my best guess.

The second photograph is much bolder with slightly weaker black level and more robust color saturation, but a bit off-putting due to the artifact(?) that appears along the right edge of the front cover; I can't imagine any book with a dust shadow of that magnitude receiving an elevated grade.

It’s an artifact. When I bought this Promise book from Heritage, I was shocked to find NO shadow on the right side. I think the newer holders cause a shadow that isn’t there, but you don’t know it until the book is in hand

Any idea what that fugly creased line running down the spine is because it's clearly visible and sure seems to be showing up on a lot of HG books.

I know they were trying to emphasize the new character, but looking back on the cover again its a bit jarring now.

Anyways, great cover great book.  Will be a fun auction to watch.

If I was a betting man, I would be that the line running down the spine is just light from the scan reflecting off the spine at the point where the curvature of the spine begins, and that it isn't really a crease, and hence why you might be seeing it show up on a lot of HG books.

I guess it's a case of to each their own, but I certainly not your best looking 9.4 book with that rather large green pencilled "D" mark on the cover and definitely don't care for that creased line that seems to be running down the entire spine.  

Any idea what that fugly creased line running down the spine is because it's clearly visible and sure seems to be showing up on a lot of HG books. 

I know it’s not the best looking 9.4 but you gotta take what you can get when it comes to this book. It rarely comes up in a 4.0 or above, plus, it’s known for having color touch no matter the grade.
