LOVELESS #1

Written by Brian Azzarello

Art and cover by Marcelo Frusin

Fresh off his white-hot run on SUPERMAN, Eisner award-winning writer Brian Azzarello (100 BULLETS, BATMAN) has created a Western for the new millennium. Reuniting with HELLBLAZER artist Marcelo Frusin, Azzarello has fashioned a tough-as-nails monthly series that combines all the bloody action and atmosphere of a Sergio Leone film with the provocative storytelling of HBO's Deadwood. The extra-sized 40-page issue #1 is just $2.99; future issues are 32 pages.

Wes Cutter is a wanted man running from a violent past - the horrors of the Civil War, a brutal stint in a Union prison camp, and the savage fallout of Reconstruction. Now he's on a quest for the one thing in short supply: peace. Joining Wes is his beautiful wife Ruth, a woman who has been to hell and back herself - and hides dark secrets of her own. The road they travel will be a bloody one, leaving a trail of bodies stretching from Missouri to the Pacific Ocean. This is a tale only Azzarello - the mind behind some of the hardest-hitting comics of the last decade - could tell.

Nine. Nine crossovers, and that's just one month. And all of them no doubt essential to the continuity, like the recent OMAC/Wonder Woman fiasco.

I think it's official. This Infinite Crisis business is just another run-of-the-mill marketing maneuver designed to trick readers into buying dozens more comics than they would have. This isn't a new editorial direction at DC, and it's not intended to generate new readership.

It's just like all the other multi-title crossovers that have ever happened - screw the loyal reader with a kind of comic book Ponzi scheme. Promise a big payoff for only the price of a miniseries (or four), then before you know it, you're out a couple hundred bucks due to all these idiotic crossovers and nothing of any ultimate consequence happens anyway.

I'm not wasting any more time with this. It's clear to me what they're doing.

It hasn't tricked me any. For the most part, I still only read the OMAC tie ins and titles that I choose. If I miss things by not reading Nightwing, Batgirl, or Green Arrow, I'm sure I can find out the details on the boards. smile.gif

This is all provided that people don't enjoy the crossover issues and feel ripped off.

I only plan to get four of the nine you listed - I usually get Batman and JSA and have added the Superman books to my pull list. Of the others, the Nightwing issue may be interesting, but I will look at the other books listed when they come out and decide whether or not to get them.

This doesn't bother me at all, as it is meant to get people to buy more comics done by different creators that they might actually like and want to stay with after the crossover.

What bother me these days is that people spend way too much time and money worrying about and buying multiple copies of the SAME book just to get variant covers.... and DC does it as well as Marvel so they aren't immune. DC's main strategy seems to get people interested in their line of comics, and I don't see a problem with that at all.
