I think the Exorcist movies are probably the best comparison with the Joker flicks. The reception for Joker 2 reminds me a lot of what happened when Exorcist 2 was released. An absolute disaster, with audiences booing and laughing. Like Joker, Exorcist 2 was not only dissimilar to its predecessor, but it made it seem that a lot of what was seen in the first movie was not really important, changing the characters and the ending. Very similar situation to Joker 2.

Event Horizon.  I can watch The Excorcist today and not cry like a baby.  Time and maturity has lessen the shock of that movie.  I still can't watch Event Horizon.

Event Horizon is one of those films that you really have to watch it and then go, what the bejesus was that???

Just plain scary, odd and unsettling.

The Blair Witch Project and its sequel would be another good example of drop off.
