as an online retailer they blow eBay out of the water. If eBay excelled in selling pez dispensers on its platform that won’t make them survive when 80-90 percent of its business is lost to the better competitor with general retail products

EBay has its niche. Maybe Amazon eventually eats that niche, maybe they don't want to bother. EBay has not lost 80-90% of its business. Its revenues are about 70% of its peak, true, but others have cut into that. Facebook might be cutting into it as much as Amazon.
