The Spirit.

Particularly post-WW 2, when Will Eisner had refined his art style and used a wide range of storytelling techniques and mood, most famously the classic, influential, gritty urban crime noir.

A genius creator of many short-but-brilliant stories.

The Lou Fine Covers during the war weren't too shabby either.

The Comet from Pep Comics #3 (April 1940, Archie Comics), a chemist who injected himself with a special gas that was many times lighter than hydrogen, allowing him to not only achieve flying leaps (and later fly), but also allowing him to fire beams out of his eyes, and wore glass goggles to keep his powers under control.

I always liked the Black Terror.  Not his backstory so much, just found the simple uniform, pretty cool.

Black Terror:  "Like my uniform?"

Frank Castle:  "Why yes....yes I do".

Notably, Nedor Comics also had a hero named the Grim Reaper, whose real name was Bill Norris, a concentration camp victim (Wonder Comics #2, August 1944).

Yeah I always liked the costumes of Nedor's Black Terror and their similar Grim Reaper.

This.

Black Terror's superpowers come from huffing ether.

Super strong punch? Yeah - because he's higher than a meth-head!

Also, Patricia Highsmith ("Strangers on a Train," "The Talented Mister Ripley") wrote some of his adventures.

Kid Eternity.

This character seems custom-designed for episodic television, like Highway to Heaven or Quantum Leap.

If they'd stop trying to make the revivals grim and gritty, there's a lot of potential here.
