It's old high school sorority - someone was invited and was through the hazing before joining the sisterhood.

Some were different without hazing.  Some preferred girls who considered "Elite" in the group.   It died out in 1960's.  My mother told me about it a little bit and was a homecoming queen. Her class of '59.
