Am I crazy or is this not a CGC 9.8?

I’m sure I’m beating a dead horse with this topic, but I won this off of ebay at auction recently and I was very disappointed at the quality of the book once I inspected at home.  I’m giving the seller the benefit of the doubt at the moment, but he only posted 4 grainy pictures with the comic inside of the CGC bag and, in hindsight, I should have asked for better pictures, but it is what it is.
I have quite a few 9.8s in my collection so I’m not a total newbie, but I just want to make sure I’m not completely crazy about this being over graded.  I think a 9.4 is probably appropriate, but a 9.8? Mr Magoo must have been doing some freelance for CGC that day.
Anyway, I see a color breaking spine tick on the front and a couple on the back, multiple color rubs areas on the front and back, color loss at the bottom left corner and bottom edge, a 1/4” color breaking line at the top back edge and the worst being a 1/16 corner crease on the back corner.
Let me know what you guys think?21BAD899-95BD-4C4E-A534-4061A3507BDB.thumb.jpeg.de719796c54f4f8dc1372a675bb44861.jpeg214DA318-76BA-4368-830D-BE8A3E16F1E2.thumb.jpeg.b1579af93f493a60e3d2f67a602e1c18.jpeg02E6DBBC-8F80-42F4-85F9-2DF7435FA1E6.thumb.jpeg.50704642813a3dcd8b7d0d40b61dd8c6.jpeg02E6DBBC-8F80-42F4-85F9-2DF7435FA1E6.thumb.jpeg.50704642813a3dcd8b7d0d40b61dd8c6.jpeg992FE154-AE73-492B-935F-975E43AFD247.thumb.jpeg.21ab53dcf6b3f771eec2ae1b7ebcfd9d.jpeg

There’s a small but non zero chance of damage after grading and during encapsulation.  Additionally, graders are human and like the rest of us do better  and worse on some days and make errors.

additionally, there’s a small chance of damage after encapsulation AND a chance that some imperfections were pressed but not permanently pressed out.

bottom line is that out of millions of books graded, they’re not all going to be perfect for any number of reasons.

if you’re not satisfied, consider returning it.  Additionally, if you feel like reporting to Cgc maybe they can identify patterns.

The issues with the corners are allowed on a 9.8 since they are factory defects and not due to wear so if those are part of your complaint, then yes you are crazy.

I don't like the upper one though since it looks like wear from handling which would not be allowed on a 9.8 so you wouldn't be crazy for reporting that one. Please post in the "ask CGC forum" to report to CGC.

Thanks for your input.  Yes, I definitely keep in mind that at the end of the day it’s humans grading these books and a few under/over graded books are bound to pop up every so often.
I decided to return the book because it has too many flaws for my liking.   Thanks again.

I mainly collect modern, so I am aware that bindery tears/wear are allowed on a 9.8, but what was bothering me the most was the 1/4” area to front lower left corner bottom edge, which is close to being paper loss in my opinion.  And also that small corner crease.  Thanks for taking the time to answer.

I'm curious if you checked the certification number on the CGC site or not...

Yes, it matches the book and the case doesn’t look tampered with.  It was graded July 2020, so chances are that due to the high volume of submissions they’ve been receiving they’ve had to hire less experienced graders.

There is NO way that book should be a 9.8.  If I was in the market for that book and it was sold to me that way I would be pissed.

I agree.  I just couldn’t get over all the flaws so I decided to return the book.  Fortunately the seller was easy to deal.
