HuddyBee
So I recently purchased a raw copy of Captain Marvel Adventures No. 30 from 1943, and to my surprise the book was about 1/2 cm taller than my bags and boards for Golden Age books (BCW). I've never run into a Golden Age book that was too "tall," sure too wide, but never a book that was actually taller than my bags and boards. I haven't been collecting Golden Age books for a long time (more of a silver guy), so as you can imagine this caught me completely unaware. What do you guys do when you acquire a book that is taller than the traditional bags and boards? Are there special "tall" bags/mylars I can buy? Or is there an alternate type of storage that you usually use for books that are too tall? Any insight would help, thanks. Edit: I realize I could just use magazine bags/boards, but I'm wondering if there isn't a better solution. adamstrange
I use Super Gold from Bill Cole which is 8.25" wide x 10.5" tall (with .75" tab) and that's worked for everything I have that's considered "standard" GA. I have a couple magazine sized comics but their magazine size works for them. comicjack, OdinsSecrets and Robot Man 2
Robot Man
Yep, what he said. There are even magazine size mylars if you need even more room. And all these GA books store well in magazine size boxes. Welcome to the un-familiar world of GA. You will love it! HuddyBee and rjpb 1

My boards and bags are 10.5" tall however the problem is that the book I have is about 0.5-1 cm taller than the boards/bags. Edit: So the book is actually probably more like 10.75" tall Edited April 3, 2021 by HuddyBee
adamstrange
I'm surprised that you're having a problem with a book from '43, as the biggest GA books I've run into were pre-WW II. I checked the Heritage Archives and there are copies of that issue that fit into a standard size slab. Perhaps you purchased a copy that was cut extra tall at the printing plant? Most books would probably be around 10.25". I know that golden age books often have irregularities between issues during printing (at least with width), so I figured that this was probably a fairly common occurrence (a book being too tall) however I'm guessing maybe it's not. Readcomix
I just measured my CMA 30 and it’s 10-3/8” tall. At 10.75” yours does seem to be an unusually tall cut. There were some books produced post-1943 at taller than standard size; off the top of my head, some of the late run issues of True Comics and a couple issues of Fighting Marines (St John) were taller than normal. AJD
Collecting Australian GA books, some of them are monsters. I usually use magazine size Gerber mylites and fullbacks, but even those don't cut it for the biggest ones! The Australian Fawcett reprints came in at 12" x 8 3/4" and then there are the square(ish) Flash Gordon/Mandrake etc issues at 10 3/4" x 10 1/4". Likewise the UK 'newspaper' size Mickey Mouse weeklies are just too big to store in any standard mylar. I love all those books, but they are a pain in the $%^#*^ to store. I've found that there are specialist archival suppliers who can supply extra large mylar sleeves - just don't expect to pick them up at the same sort of prices you pay for comic supplies.
