Is this a Gaines?

Is this a Gaines File Copy that's lost its pedigree?

Pointy corners, good pages, bright colors and ne'er a spine tick to be seen.  It's downright mint!

It's currently in the Clink auction and the description (mistakenly) states "This 9.8 Gaines File Copy is valued at multiples of the 9.2 Guide price."

It's very rare to see such a high grade EC book that isn't a Gaines File copy...

According to the census, there is (1) 9.9 and (8) 9.8s of for this book.  Assuming there were the usual 12 copies of this book in Gaines' closet (I have the master list someplace but feeling too lazy to dig it out), it would be unusual for 9 of the 12 to grade 9.8 or higher.  Typically grades for file copies ranged from 9.0-9.8 with most in the 9.2-9.6 range.  It's hard to declare certainty either way.  There are non-GFC copies out there that graded 9.6-9.8, but as @The Lions Den stated, they are rare.  The vast majority of high grade ECs on the census are file copies.  2c
