Is it just me or do spine splits affect grade more then a detached cover or centerfold?

In order of worse to less worse: *max grade approximations in my opinion :foryou:

Cover completely detached and completely split ~1.5

Cover completely detached (tie) ~3.0

Spine split of 3-4 inches (tie) ~3.0 - ~3.5

- depends on the length of split(s) -

Cover detached at one staple ~5.5/6.0

Centerfold completely detached ~6.5/7/0

Centerfold detached at one staple ~8.5/9.0

Less than 1" tear ~9.0

Or, I could be completely wrong @CHASEnBLUE

👍Sounds pretty darn good. (Let me write it down.)

The length of a tear with no other flaw will be determined, of course, by it's length. 1" is likely going to cap you at 6.5/7.0. The tear will need to be 1/4" or less to allow a book to remain in the NM range. I think a tear 1/2"-3/4" could land you in the 7.5-8.5 range.

IMO the flaws are more or less equal, but more forgiveness is given to a tear in certified grading. A spine split of 1/4" is likely to knock you down to 6.0/6.5. Deduct 0.5 for every 1/4" greater. A tear won't hurt as much.

Or I could be off my rocker...
