Many actors have taken a stab at playing the Penguin (aka Oswald Cobblepot) over the years, but Danny DeVito’s strange, hilarious and grotesque turn as the Gotham City mobster in “Batman Returns” has stood the test of time. Most recently, Colin Farrell put a darker spin on the villain in Matt Reeves’ “The Batman” starring Robert Pattinson.

Hooked up to a lie detector test for Vanity Fair, DeVito was forced to share his opinion on Farrell’s performance, saying: “I love Colin. He’s a terrific guy. My Penguin was better.”

DeVito then looked over at the polygraph examiner and asked, “Was that the truth? It most certainly was. In my opinion.”

Are they keeping anyone from 'Gotham' TV show?

I liked Oswald Cobblepot on that show - Robin Lord-Taylor was excellent.

If they are allowed to do a crossover I hope Ben McKenzie and Donal Logue get a gig.

DON SALVATORE MARONI JOINS THE FRAY

The Illuminerdi has learned from our sources that HBO Max is looking to cast a man in his 60’s to play Salvatore Maroni. Don Salvatore Maroni is the head of the Maroni crime family, an organization that has a long-standing rivalry with the Falcones. Don Maroni has been featured in film and TV programs such as The Dark Knight, Gotham, Batman Forever, and even The Batman, often as a younger man.

THE PENGUIN: HBO MAX IS CASTING THESE NEW CHARACTERS

Additionally, The Penguin is looking to cast three more characters, who appear to be created for the show.

“Eve” is a sex worker in her 50’s who doesn’t take spoon from anyone. She agrees to help cover for Cobblepot. “Nick” is a 30 year old man who is employed at a plant controlled by The Penguin. He is distinguished by the gold cross constantly worn around his neck. Finally, HBO Max is looking for a male actor in their 40’s to play “Dr. Rueben Desotto”, whose work is less than ethical. These three will be supporting characters.

HBO Max’s “The Batman” spinoff series “The Penguin” has cast Clancy Brown in a recurring role, Variety has learned.

Brown joins a cast that includes series lead Colin Farrell, who will reprise the role of Oswald “The Penguin” Cobblepot from “The Batman, as well as Cristin Milioti, Rhenzy Feliz, Michael Kelly, Shohreh Aghdashloo, and Deirdre O’Connell.

Brown will appear as Salvatore Maroni, a notorious Gotham City crime boss. The character was referenced repeatedly in “The Batman,” as his arrest by corrupt Gotham officials and the collapse of his criminal empire allowed for Carmine Falcone’s organization to rise. Maroni has previously been portrayed onscreen by actors like David Zayas in “Gotham” at Fox and by Eric Roberts in “The Dark Knight.”

The Fox Studios acquisition may allow Disney to call the live small screen shots with Batman

Quote

Kinney National Service, Inc. purchased DC Comics (then known as National Periodical Publications) in the late 1960s along with Warner Bros., effectively becoming Warner Communications by 1972. This purchase helped secure the rights to the vast library of DC characters save for one. The 1960s Batman TV series starring Adam West was produced by 20th Century Fox, who still holds the rights to the Batman character in live-action on the small screen. In fact, even though Gotham aired on Fox network, Batman could not appear except for the last shot of the show, since Warner Bros. Television produced it. When Disney split up Fox's television assets in their merger, they almost certainly acquired the rights in that deal. That Disney is in the fight now makes it even less likely that Robert Pattinson could suit up on The Penguin.

Even if the Matt Reeves' TV series was an HBO Max exclusive, the TV rights agreement from the 1960s still applies. Some examples of how the Fox deal impacted Batman's TV appearances include Titans, which used an adult MR. Grayson as Robin on the show. Rumors online at the time also suggested producers used Batman in two quick, dark dream sequences without permission. The Arrowverse did this too, name-dropping characters before trying to introduce them. Since Titans' first season finale was scrapped altogether, WB had to debut the episode or end Season 1 on an even worse cliffhanger. While he never appeared in costume again, Bruce Wayne did join the series for Seasons 2 and 3 and even did some fighting.
