Comic Con Brings Phil Jimenez to New Hampshire

PORTSMOUTH, NH - Bigger and better is the theme for the second PBBZ Comic Con and Small Press Fest, coming Sunday, Nov. 13, to the Frank Jones Center in Portsmouth, NH.

Hundreds of comic fans from around the region attended the first Comic Con back in May, and the show’s organizers at The Paperback Bazaar are working hard to make the next convention even more memorable. The show has been moved to a bigger venue and will feature a number of great guests, including the artist behind the industry’s current best-selling comic.

Guest of Honor Phil Jimenez, whose artwork can been seen in the chart-topping Infinite Crisis mini-series for DC Comics, will be greeting his fans and signing comics all day at the PBBZ Comic Con and Small Press Fest. One of the most popular pencillers in the business today and widely regarded as “The Nicest Man in Comics,” Jimenez has produced fan-favorite runs on DC Comics’ Wonder Woman and Marvel Comics’ New X-Men titles.

Also on hand will be a brand new local comic company, Wicked Good Comics, and two other respected New England publishers, Jetpack Press and Digital Webbing. Other guests include local favorites Ron Fortier, Rich Woodall, and many more to come.

Local artists are being invited to submit a piece for the first-ever PBBZ FOOP (Friends Of Ol’ Paperback) Sketchbook, a special showcase for area comic creators. Original artwork for this black-and-white sketchbook can be dropped off, attention Ralph, at The Paperback Bazaar, or email a low-resolution scan to pbbz@pbbz.com. The goal is to have it printed before the PBBZ Comic Con, so please get submissions in as soon as possible. Depending on the response, the promoters may need to limit the number of sketches used in the sketchbook.

Artists whose submitted sketches are used will receive a free copy of the sketchbook and the opportunity to purchase additional copies at a discounted price. Those artists published will be invited to sit in on a signing at the PBBZ Comic Con and will also get free entry to the show. Anyone interested in participating should contact Ralph at pbbz@pbbz.com for more information.

Dozens of vendors will also be on hand at the PBBZ Comic Con and Small Press Fest, offering a wide variety of today’s hottest collectibles, including comic books, toys, manga, HeroClix, Yu Gi Oh, and much more. Several comic and gaming publishers have donated an abundance of giveaways and doorprizes for the fans in attendance, including copies of Strangers in Paradise from Robin and Terry Moore at Abstract Studio; free posters, bookmarks and other items from DC Comics; and a free Transformers comic for the first 100 people through the door.

A gathering of comic book fans, publishers, creators and those that want to break into the comic book business, the PBBZ Comic Con and Small Press Fest will be held on Sunday, Nov. 13, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Frank Jones Center, conveniently located on the Route 1 By-Pass in Portsmouth, NH. Tickets for the show will be $5, with discount passes available at The Paperback Bazaar. For more information please visit www.pbbz.com or call (603) 742-2626.
