Impact this defect would have on books?

I was at my uncle's house this week and was looking through some of the books that he bought while growing up.  He bought many of them from a second hand book store to save money and some of them came with a big "USED" stamped on the back in red or black ink.  How badly would that lower the value of his books? Perhaps not that much on his as his aren't in that great of shape even without the stamp. I have photos of one of them for an example.  Most of his books were in similar if not worse condition as the one in the photos.

Always liked that cover :)

The book looks to be in the 3.0 range (which makes it sound like a turkey) and I don't think the stamp would make much difference as a result. I'm not so sure how CGC would treat it were the book of a high enough grade for the stamp to be material - they give some industry stamps a pass completely (like UK price stamps) as they see them as part of the distribution process. But this stamp, whilst clean and on the reverse, is specific to one outlet so they may knock a point off for that reason.

Let's see if my response gets others to join in, who are more familiar with how CGC treat these things.

3.0/3.5

Stamp wouldn't matter in this grading range. On a higher copy personally I'd deduct 0.5-1.0 grades. It's not a distribution stamp but one from the book's life a generation later. It doesn't bother me.

Thanks for sharing.

My uncle somehow managed to avoid buying any keys or books of any real value. It was quite remarkable really. For instance he has many ASM in sequence leading up 100, but stopped at 99 and picked up again at 103 and managed to stop buying ASM altogether before he hit the 120's 😂

You can be lucky like that, can't you Hooch

Maybe the chap running the USED stamp second hand book shop knew his stuff and priced the keys accordingly. I remember years and years ago going to a comic shop in the UK called Gosh! and finding an early Spidey run. Most were priced 40p, a few 60p but #50 was a whopping £3.50. I left that behind because I could get six or seven other ones for the same money. If we could only go back, eh.....

As stated above, if this was a higher grade copy it'd be safe to say CGC would probably knock it down at least half a grade if not a full point.
