Hi. I just joined CGC and sent in 16 of my comics. As a kid (I am 49 now) I collected many comics and had them in plastic bags and back boards. I usually bought 2 of the same comic one to read and one to sell. I was little surprised like some when I sent my first 16 comics into CGC I was hoping for a better grade. Seems the needle is stuck at 9.4-9.8. I did not take out a magnifying gas and I did not check every page or look for minor dents in the covers since I know CGC are the pros. Any advice on an "easy" way to figure out which books to send in that are worth the most? I get looking at ebay at what sold and such, just wish an easier form was available. I do not have any rare comics most of my collection 3500 but a huge potion 85% is mint. Thanks for your time!

I mean most of it depends on your own personal preferred profit margins are and goals are.

what is the minimum return on investment you’re looking for after all the costs of grading and selling relative to the price of selling raw?  How risk averse are you?  How much cash can you tie up for many months?  What are your collection goals?  What is your tax/business situation if any?

generally, figure out how much it will cost you to submit, then apply your minimum required marginal profit margin (over the raw book), then look up the selling price of graded books in your estimated grade, see if the  math works out.

FYI, in comic grading "Mint" means "9.9", which is an exceptionally rare condition. You will likely have to temper expectations, as most comic books are around 9.4 in condition off of the shelf.

You were hoping for a better grade than 9.4-9.8? Those are all typical high grades and generally the best people should hope to get. You won't get a 9.9 or 10.0. It just does not happen. Those grades are reserved for the most immaculate books.

If you upload some pics of your books, there are folks on here happy to help provide grade estimates in the Hey Buddy Can You Spare a Grade forum. Familiarizing yourself with corner wear, spine ticks and other very minor flaws that affect the grades is also helpful.

This.  When I read the OP, my first thought was "Wow!  He got a 9.8 on something".  That sounds pretty good to me for a first submission.  Many, many peoples "first time" was a huge kick in the balls (myself included).

Multiple good points in the responses - mainly temper expectations, enjoy when you get a 9.8, pretty much give up hope of 9.9 or 10.

Similar to you, I purchased many about the same time off the shelf and most have come back in 9.4 - 9.6 range with some coming back at 9.8. I've gotten better at looking at them to see if there are creases, etc. that pressing can help with or roll the dice with a straight submission.

For value, you can check the boards for those heating up or I also look at Go Collect top 100 to see if anything is getting hot. This can help with determining those of value and worth CGC submission. Also need to keep in mind the extreme length of time on submissions now.

I think I read about enough ball kickers from CGC so that when I submitted, I graded super harsh and was actually happy (and may have gotten a semi gift grade on one book only because the flaws were most prominent on the back and the front was pristine).

Why not show off your books here. We would like to see your shining books.  FYI, Gem Mint is less than 1% in CGC Census.

First thanks to everyone for the warm welcome. I have attached a few of the comics that I received back from CGC as well as some photos of my crazy now christened comic room lol. I am replacing every bag and back board. These photos are no high rez they are quick shots of examples of comics I got back and just a few I have laid out on the floor.

What are people opinions of sending Hulk 340's back and seeing if they can press or work any magic to get a 9.8. It seems 9.6's goes around $500-$600 but 9.8 seems to be $1200 and up?

Thanks again!

I have looked at that form and I think it is really has a good layout. I will post comics that I am going to send in for my next batch but I am been trying to change back boards and plastics =/.

I totally understand your point. I think (could be wrong) that as a kid I bought all my comics from a comic shop and maybe they actually cared about the comics. They also put them in plastics and back boards. There where never exposed comics. IDK.

My Secret Wars 8 got an 8.5 but I knew that comic was a little beat up but I sent it cause I "should" be able to get $100-$200 for it I am thinking.

Thanks. I did not ask for the pressing why I am wondering if my 9.8's or even my 2 hulk 340 9.6 might get better if I paid for the service. I know it could be other defects in the comics why it was scored down but as you said its a roll of the dice. What do you think just run with the numbers I received or send back ask for the service and regrade?

Also, I was lucky my total time was under a week to get them back =P

Hi there Sgt Wilson, I'm really looking forward to seeing some of your comics. At 49 you can call yourself a mature kid. I'm one at 57 & I'm still as keen on my comics as ever. Welcome to the boards.

Thanks for the warm welcome. I posted a few little photos of my crazy now deemed comic room that I am working on them slowly. When I can get organized I will post some for grading etc.
