Can't recall if the Fantasy Masterpieces volume 2 Warlock reprints were from Starlin's 'Strange Tales', as the later 'Warlock' titled issues had Pip, the troll. Been too long since I read them.

This would be my advice as well. 

I would pick up a Kirby era FF surfer cover. 55, 72, and 74 would be my preference, but it's hard to go wrong. 

 

When I started collecting I was a big SS collector. Most of the books I bought over the years have come and gone. I've upgraded or sold them to buy other books.   But I still have my FF 48-50, 72 and SS1-18 from 20+ years ago when I first started collecting. 

Hopefully he'll get something he appreciates enough to hang onto for a long long time.
