What is the "ind" between the M and A mean?

It's a distinct marking identifying the publication ("Mad").  Notice the circle "R" next to it.  That's for a registered trademark.

Actually, the IND stands for Independent News Distribution, the exclusive national distributor of Mad magazine starting in 1957.
