OT, but I have a friend who is a diarist.  He has kept it every day for decades.  It got him in some trouble once, but it's fascinating, and he understands (in a general way, not specific to him) how valuable a diary can be in exactly the way described here.  He laments the loss of this as a broader hobby for that reason.  I doubt Facebook posts will make much of a substitute.

They're not even useful to humanity now, let alone mankind of the future. 

The British thing surprised me. 1850 is so recent, and we don't know what that third condiment was? Reminds me of the 3 shells in Demolition Man.
