Except that's not what they are currently saying (even if that's what they mean).  What it SAYS is that "CGC does not assign values to collectibles."  Period.  At any time.  And then they go on to assign a value to the collectibles they grade.

You want to get an appraisal before you get the books graded.  We have a forum where people will give their opinions on grading and you need to do your homework.

Without knowing which books you have, I can't recommend an auction house.

By saying "what books you have," they don't mean what company published them.  DC published books that are worth a lot, and published some that have a low market value.  Marvel published books that ended up being worth a lot, and others, even from the 1960s, that aren't worth more than $10 unless they're in absolutely perfect condition.

To get a ballpark value, you can look up your books on eBay and select "sold items" to see what they've been selling for, but keep in mind that condition is king.  A book with zero creases or bends of any kind will fetch a lot more money than one that looks like it spent a lot of time in some kid's back pocket.

The book itself (issue and number) and the grade of the book all determine value.

Without knowing what you have, CGC grading may not even be a viable option if the cost of grading outweighs the actual value of the book.

You should list the actual books you have and folks will let you know if any are worth grading. If any are worth grading then open a thread in the...https://boards.cgccomics.com/forum/42-hey-buddy-can-you-spare-a-grade/ section, post clear, sharp pics of the inside/outside of front/back covers, pics of the spine, corners, staples, centerfold, etc., also take note if any coupons are filled out, if there is any writing on the interior pages, if any ads are clipped, pages are missing/torn. If you are going to collect you should learn about grading as you go along, it will help you with what you have now and what you may buy in the future.

Great Glossary on this site, grading standards are outdated so ignore those.

Once you have assigned a grade to the books in question then you can use eBay Sold Auctions to see what these books in the same grade are selling for, eBay sold auctions are actual FMV since that is what folks are actually paying. (Ignore Buy It Now prices, do not compare raw/ungraded books to CGC graded books for value).

As far as insurance, there is a insurance company that supplies insurance for collectibles only, no appraisal is needed, you determine the amount of coverage you want/need and can change it at any time. I have used CIS for over 10 years now, never had to file a claim (KNOCK ON WOOD!!!). I sent them a list of all of the books/collectibles I have and sent them an updated list yearly. In 2015 I graded and photographed 2000+ books in my collection and that info is saved to my laptop and 2 separate flashdrives, I also update FMV of my top 100 books every 6 month's.

On top of all of that is proper storage...
