Dark Horse Star Wars comics with UPC stickers over the UPC code

I have about 100 Dark horse Star Wars comics that all have this UPC code sticker applied over the UPC code.  I tried removing it on one to disastrous results.  I was curious about where these might have come from and how they would impact the grade of those comics, should I decide to send them in.  I've seen the UPC stickers that say Star Wars Universe and seen newsstand UPC stickers over a blank UPC box on other DH books, but I can't seem to find any information on this specific issue, other than an eBay listing calling it a "very rare newsstand edition" :eyeroll:

That particular comic is a Direct Edition with a store bar code sticker placed over the manufactured bar code.

If it was a newsstand copy from Dark Horse, it would have Star Wars above the UPC and not Direct Sales.455ABADE-BECF-4848-A131-763D1FB71519.png.e898b063ff14ff89db04097fafcb34f9.png

Here is an example of an actual SW Republic 65 newsstand.6BB1B7D8-E791-4F82-8275-AD14BF0B6C3A.png.f61736d36fa6112f98d6873e78954e9b.png97266362-7D43-4FFA-AA32-0B1C5185FCB0.png.927facb5c299d41584ada4853d15683b.png

Joe's experience is consistent with my own.  (thumbsu  Instead of deciding how much to deduct for the cover sticker, CGC will simply award the book a Qualified (Green Label) Grade, which enables them to ignore this single blemish/defect and assign a numerical grade based on its "otherwise" condition.  Here are two examples:  :foryou:

Agreed - CGC will just qualify it.

But suppose it was an Universal label?

Dunno - somewhere between 5.5 and 8.0?

Possibly.  (thumbsu  It all depends on the amount of "otherwise" wear.  The highest Universal (Blue Label) Grade I've seen is for this gorgeous Carson City copy.  However, I would not be surprised if CGC was a bit more critical of an 18 year old comic than an 83 year old one.   :hi:

No kidding, Kev.  Those are brutal grades considering the absence of handling wear.

Yeah, here is the raw.

I like my books raw so have only sent in for slabbing once, just to try it and it was a disaster, I sent 10 books, the 2 x TMNT with stickers I was told wouldn't matter, my JIM 83 what I had for years came back purple, a  9.8 candidate TOD #1 I caught on the bag and put a 1" split in the front cover, etc. I think I was happy with 1 out of 10 books, never again.

If it’s from the manufacturer, what label will a book receive?

That, I am not sure of. The only stickers I have dealt with were added by a third party individual.

Is it common knowledge or easily verified that the manufacturer put any stickers on the UPC, and also easily verifiable that the specific stickers on a given comic are the ones the specific ones the manufacturer placed there? Seems like a lot of extra extremely-tough-to-verify work for CGC.  If I'm cgc I'd need A LOT of evidence before I made a decision other than qualified.
