Point Five's 3rd Annual Grading Contest: ROUND 1 BOOKS!
6 6

51 posts in this topic

Here we go!

-- If you're just joining us, please go to the signup thread to read the full rules and sign up (up until tomorrow 9 AM). Still a few slots left.

-- The books have not been pressed, cleaned or altered in any way since these raw scans were taken.

-- There are 3 books in this round; all are now in CGC slabs. Once you've graded the raw scans to your satisfaction, send me a PM with your grades (make the title "Grading Contest: [your username]") and I'll record them. Send just one PM with all of your grades, and add to it for future rounds; no changing of grades. You can copy/paste the below:

ROUND 1

Detective Comics #359:

The Hawk #10:

Jungle Comics #36:

-- As kind of an experiment, I've decided to post the full grading notes with each book. **In my opinion, this has the potential to be slightly misleading...** in some cases, the notes use harsher language than I would use to describe a book's flaw, and on the other hand there are plenty of flaws not mentioned at all. So I would tend to weigh your eyes  and grading prowess more heavily than the notes, except when they describe flaws not visible.

-- Scoring is as follows:
Bullseye = 5 points
1 grade off = 3 points
2 grades off = 1 point
3 or more grades off = -1 point
(so remember: with this contest, the higher score the better.)

-- Once more with feeling: do not use the census for this contest.

-- Grades are due Saturday, August 27th 10 pm EST.

Good luck!

Jon

3. Jungle Comics #36:

[grading notes]
large, light bend center of front cover
small crease left top of back cover
small tear right center of front cover
very light spine stress lines to cover

[my note]
The center bend noted above is extremely faint; I can just barely see a hint of it on the FC in strong light, and didn't see it before I submitted the book.

-- If you click on the scans, they should get somewhat bigger (they do for me, anyway.)

-- Do not discuss the books or grades in these threads.

-- When you submit grades, I'll reply but it may take me some time. Don't panic.

Cheers!

Gonna try a new techniques and grade after one pass.

Inclusion of the grading notes is an interesting twist.

IMHO no grading notes should be included and we all grade the book "fresh".

I think we all accept the limitations of grading a book not in hand and any defect that does not appear in scans penalizes us all equally.
