Deutero
Recently bought a collection of mainly SA/BA Batmans and Detective Comics. Found this with them! Obviously in rough shape and the spine is taped. Bit conflicted about whether I’d actually get it graded as it’s so cool to look through. Definitely the oldest comic in my collection now (but about 15 years) and I’m kind of awestruck by the fact that this was read during WWII! Anyway what grade do you fine folks think this is? Thanks in advance Edited January 18, 2023 by Deutero Update Turnando and Galen130
scburdet
2.5/3.0-a shot in the dark. I think CGC has some strange standards for taping, so it's going to be a judgement call on what purpose it serves. https://www.cgccomics.com/news/article/3327/CGC-Modifies-Stance-on-Grading-Submissions-with-Tape/ RockMyAmadeus and Deutero 1
Point Five
Hmm, I was thinking 1.5. Seems like a lot of structural stuff going on with the spine, in addition to the abundant tape. There's probably a non-zero chance of a bit of overhang edge trimming as well. I love this cover BTW. Not a book I'd submit, but still a great one! I wasn't sure how much that tape affects the grade. Scburdet is right that CGC has 'strange standards for tape', e.g. if it's a piece or two sealing a tear CGC tunes it out & there's no effect on the grade. I would think this example goes way beyond that, but who really knows. RockMyAmadeus and Deutero 1

grendelbo
1.8-2.0 Depends on what that tape is fixing. Looks to be trying to mend pretty significant damage. Cool regardless. I like your appreciation of the book and it's history, no matter the grade. Thanks for posting. Point Five and Deutero 1

Looks to be trying to mend pretty significant damage. I’ve owned a few GA books like this. The tape looks like an ill-considered effort to ’preserve’ (or ‘conserve’ if you prefer) the book’s edges, like might be done with a kid’s craft-paper textbook cover or something. It’s worth remembering, today we treasure these old comics, but back then they seemed as worthless and disposable as yesterday’s newspaper. Sure, why not slather it with tape, who cares? There was no particular assumption that they would be preserved and survive as well as they have. Deutero and grendelbo 1

AJD
1.8 for me. And I agree with Point Five that there's a chance of trimming - that was my first impression. I own a copy of this, and the cut of this copy seemed a bit 'off'. Point Five and Deutero 1
