I have bought very few Marvel comics ever. But for some reason back in 1988 I picked up a few for no particular reason. This was one of them.

It was a really interesting cover at the time!   I bought one off the racks as well despite having little to no interest in Spider-Man at the time.    It just looked fresh and different and the background was eye catching.   Unfortunately I sold my copy long ago.    It’s probably the only fairly valuable book I bought right off the stands so it would sure be nice to still have.     I’ll have to buy another at some point soon.

I paid cover price for these comics, which along with 99% of my original collection have been sold in recent times:

Owned them for >35 years, then had them encapsulated.  Sold soon thereafter.  (shrug)

So nice to see that even though you sold off 99% of your collection, you are still here on these boards to share your collecting experiences and knowledge with us.  :applause:

Especially when it seems that most boardies who end up selling their collections tend to no longer patrol these boards after awhile.  :(

By recently, I hope you was able to sell the rest of your BA and CA portion of your personal collection during the big wild Covid runup of 2021.  :wishluck:

Not sure, but did your collection ever go as far back as into the GA time period, as I believe it did go back into the SA if my memory in my advancing age is correct?  hm

Never collected GA.  My oldest stuff was EC comics. The SA collection was mostly Marvel-based, but I had a solid run of Adam Strange Showcase and Mystery In Space.

All purchased new by me as child. Although I was young, Dec 1983/Jan 1984 is when I first started to examine spines closely upon purchasing as my collector's OCD first took hold. A year earlier is when i learning condition mattered but I really only looked at surface and edges.  Wraps however unless really bad were not something that concerned me very much, like CGC I sought technical condition. Yet with trading cards I had to have 50/50 centering - go figure...

I'll limit it to a few of the oldest as most of my slabbed collection was purchased off the rack then self-submitted.

impressive eye for a kid!

Lol ikr I'd cause more damage reaching up to take it off the rack 😂 well at 7&8. Amazes me now how I remember most racks being nearer the floor, at least at the grocery store.

LCS another matter, ha.

Wasn't that young in 1984, but close. Still after going through my books in 2021 my estimated 9.8 hit rate is under 50% until around 1986/1987 then it jumped.  Small Color rubs did not bother me and to CGC at least currently seem to be greater penalty than what I consider more serious maladies. The reason for the 252 9.6 is a small color rub on top back right cover.

Actually I purchased more DC's than Marvel in that time frame, but virtually only  Marvel and Indies I've submitted for grading.  Maybe in the future I will sub more 1984-1986 DC's?

My oldest purchased off racks DC I've submitted to CGC:
