travizb
I recently purchased a clamshell press, and I have pressed about 20-30 books so far. I've noticed that several of them show wavy pages after bag/boarding. Attached are a couple of examples. Pressed at 160 F for 10 minutes, cold pressed (1/8 inch metal plates for 12 hours) I am located in Austin, TX area where we have a decent amount of humidity. Pictures attached: Joker issue (1975) Dredd issue (1984) A couple of questions for the group here: * How does waviness affect a CGC score? * What is the best way to fix books that have this problem after press? * What can I do to avoid having this problem in the first place. Thanks for your insight!
Cor88b
This is coming from someone that doesn't really know how to press but is 10 minutes in the press long enough? Some of my pressers will let a book go for hours.
Sauce Dog
Flaring, ie wavy pages or rippled covers, could result from a few things. Too much humidity in your humidity tank before treatment. Too little time pressed with too much moisture in it still, or even the opposite of too much time with not enough moisture. Too much pressure can also cause this (especially if you have not added in any insert protection layers into the books centerfold and inside covers)
travizb
Thanks. I suspect it might be too much pressure. Will another press help?
Sauce Dog
Yes, those are totally fixable (and honestly still happens to us all even after lots of practice), though for the exact steps and details I would recommend searching for some of the pressing groups on Facebook.
