ON NEWSSTANDS MARCH 1962

Amazing Adult Fantasy #13 - My favorite cover from the series (well ya know... besides #15, natch!) that Ditko didn't even think to sign (Hmmm...). The Table on Contents reminds us that 'Stories by Stan Lee' and 'Art by S. Ditko'... why does Stan find it necessary early on to not use first names for the artist? Obviously he'd change when the credit boxes appear later this year, but up until this time he strangely avoids it.

Page two of the first story (signed Stan Lee & S. Ditko on the splash) has ''On Sale Soon... the Hulk!' written at the bottom of the page.

Amazing Adult Fantasy #13 - I have to wonder how many letters they're actually getting for AAF, or maybe 'positive' letters... 'Joan Boocock' is Stan's wife's maiden name, the whole page is spaced out with filler, they waste time with letters like 'How old are Lee and Ditko?' (Really?) and Stan even makes use of 'I'd love to know where Stan Lee gets his ideas for his scripts' to early on lead people into believing that he actually writes scripts...

In hindsight probably not a good sign...

Rawhide Kid #28 - Jack does three stories and the cover, all inked by D. Ayers, but...suddenly the Kirby & Ayers signature (written in by Ayers) has reappeared! Stan also signs his name to each story, completely separate from the Kirby & Ayers sig. Was something said? Was an agreement reached? Is there a happy ending?

Sadly no... as we'll see this same month...

Answer: (Sort of) Tales to Astonish #32 - with a little help from photoshop by someone...

Yep, this SECOND story is interesting... remember when Stan said that he decided not to use Kirby on Spider-man, because he made everyone look too heroic... yet HERE in this story, just a few months before AF #15, Kirby shows us he could just as easily draw a less heroic person (I mean he drew a pre-Cap Steve Rodgers, remember?)

So Stan's story is just that - a STORY. Was was the real reason? Oh we shall see....

And this tale resembles what would eventually be parts of Amazing Spider-man #8. Not the first or the last time we'll see stories that Kirby WROTE, that Stan swipes and retells in the early days of the Marvel Universe...

Story TWO (inked by Paul Reinman):

Yep, once again Stan shows us his TRUE GENIUS at editorial decisions and managing temperamental 'creative types' in pursuit of a new direction and social relevancy in comic books. After all, we all know that TOO MUCH Kirby can get REALLY BORING  after a while (especially all those square jawed faces)....................Excelsior!!

For Journey Into Mystery #80 - Jack Kirby does the cover and write and pencils TWO stories, all inked by D. Ayers - and the signatures are there to prove it!

Stan again promotes his and Ditko's story on the cover, using their names: 'Also, another off-beat gem by Lee & Ditko: "For the Birds!".
