I found these two articles summarizing academic papers to be very interesting. 

This is from one of the early Superman ghost artists surveying experience of artists in the GA of comics & syndicated strips.

The second article mentions that the author had found a graduate thesis that precedes what was discussed in the first.  She says she was going to publish something about it "soon", but I can't find anything further from her.

Thanks for the links. I followed a few links and found a lecture on the relationship between comics and libraries by one of the authors of those pieces which I thought was worth reading.

Carol Tilley has been doing good research on comics, especially the Wertham area for at least 10 years.  Here is a link to my favorite article by her:
