PGM Marvel Feature #1
1 1

9 posts in this topic

Hi folks,

This Marvel Feature #1 is definitely a low grade copy but I'm wondering where it falls on the low grade spectrum. Comic is complete with all the pages but there is a spine split about 2 to 2.5" long from the bottom and also spine split about 1 inch long from the top on the back cover, and a spine split 1 about one inch long from the top on the front cover (see the last 3 photos below). I've updated the photos to show the spine (see last photo below): as you can see from the arrows, the arrows show the tears and splits on back and front covers. The back cover is barely hanging on to the spine and I don't want to handle this book too much for fear of making the spine tears worse on the back cover! The front and back cover are still attached to the book spine. Thanks for all your opinions!

3.0/3.5, although the splitting looks longer in the photos than the length you state, or maybe it's just close to splitting beyond the actual end. These square bounds are tough to find in great condition b/c the binding is so delicate. If it was a regular binding & split like this, I would drop the estimate by at least a grade. If the spine was completely attached, it still looks like it would max out around 4.0/4.5 b/c of all the color breaking creases.

Thank you for your opinions so far. I've added one more photo (very last one) that clearly shows the splits on the spine. Arrows indicate all the splits.

@scburdet:  it seems that the grading standard is a bit more lenient on square bounds.  Overstreet Guide would grade this kind of spine split (between 2" and two thirds the length of the book) as a 1.5, but maybe collectors/graders penalize large spine splits on regular comics than on square bounds?

I'm wondering if could get a few more opinions of this book based on the new photo that I uploaded? The new photo shows the spine more clearly and I believe it might change the consensus opinion (so far) of 3.0/3.5 to something else. Thanks all!
