from some years back a grail of mine shown pre submission, 3/4" inch spine split lower left corner , some foxing/rolling

Y'all would probably be correct, if the book was resubmitted today.  But the OP had this certified "some years back" (when CGC was a bit more strict with its sub-VG/FN assessments).  Because I'm of the opinion that CGC has become more lenient over the years, I'm going to say 3.5 VG-.
