Evidence of added staples?

I saw this curious book up for auction. It's got some significant water damage as you can see from the rippling on the bottom but what got me curious were the staples. Not only are they incredibly shiny, but they look weirdly positioned. Is this evidence of added staples or are these just immaculately preserved staples that were positioned weirdly during production?

If the book has water damage, it makes sense that the staples would show signs of rust. You could examine the interior to see if there are stains or rust migration to the paper around the staples. If there is, that would add significant weight to the idea they've been replaced. 

It's also possible the staples have only been cleaned. Follow the visual evidence...
