The Hard Boiled Virgin by Jack Woodford   Avon 138   1947        $15 SOLD to Tupenny Conan

One of the earliest GGA covers by Barye Philips, 'The King" of the paperback artists as he was dubbed by his fellow artists. He could paint pretty much in any style, which he proved over the years at most of the paperback houses and most notablly at Gold Medal where he painted most of their best author's covers.

Fine. Great colors and page quality, Spine and covers are smooth and uncreased. Some color flaking at rear spine. No writing inside. Woodford was controversial in his time but I've read this one and the only thing controversial was the independence of the woman in question :)

Georgie May by Maxwell Bodenheim  Avon 152   1947        $15  SOLD to goldust40

Featuring a great giant Good Girl who takes up half the cover and breaks the title plane. These were new techniques in 1947. Uncredited but has the hallmarks of early Barye Phillips.

Fine. Great colors and page quality, Spine and covers are smooth and uncreased. Small pen near left edge, some chipping at bottom of rear cover. Light finger bends and color flecks here and there. No writing inside. Bodenheim was controversial in his time as well.

Never Come Morning by Nelson Algren   Avon 185   1948          $15

That is one gorgeous GGA cover. So elegant. Copyright office credited to Ann Cantor like many Avons from #167-209 but not likely actually painted by her.  Classic Chicago JD novel by one of Avon's best sellers.

Fine minus. Great colors and page quality, Spine and covers are smooth with only light small bends here and there and some edgewear to the covers and page tips. Some spotting on the back cover only or I'd rate this Fine or better. No writing inside.

Georgia Boy by Erskine Caldwell   Avon 134   1947        $10

Uncredited but likely George Mayer headlight cover.  One of the earliest Avon GGA covers.

Fine minus/Fine. Great colors and page quality, Spine has some slant and light reader crease but covers are smooth with only light wear, some wear to the rear spine. Some very faint pencil arrival above girls head. No writing inside.

Where The Girls Were Different by Erskine Caldwell   Avon 151   1947        $8

Headlight cover copyright office credited to the mysterious "Perlowen".  Another early Avon GGA cover to a best selling author.

Very Good Plus. Colors are bright, and pages are tight. This is flat and square but has a bit more creasing and spine/edgewear. No writing inside. Still an attractive looking copy of a campy title.

The Black Angel by Cornell Woolrich   Avon 96   1946        $20 SOLD to PopKulture

Classic early mass market novel by the greatest suspense writer of the Golden Age. Wild cover with a Harpy in the moonlight and gallows.

Very Good. High grade for this book, just a hair below my keeper. Tough to find this square and tight. Has moderate creasing and edgewear, some staining to the moonlight. Near white pages and cover interiors, really nice. No writing inside.

Temptations of Valerie by Harry Whittington  Avon T-197   1957  PBO Movie Tie In     $20

Awesome Anita Ekberg headlights photo cover from the movie tie-in.  Actually a western packaged as GGA by the great Harry Whittington, master of all 160 page PBO formats.

Very Good Plus. Spine is tight with slight slant. Covers have some light reader creasing, spine tear near top, some dimples and bends but very bright with great color and gloss.

Pellucidar by Edgar Rice Burroughs  Ace 65852  1st Frazetta Ace edition.  September 1972    $18   SOLD to p-kay14

Sweet Frazetta GGA battle cover. Amazing.

Very Fine minus. Glossy and new looking. Great colors.  Hints of a hairline trace crease on spine edge and a touch of wear at the top corner front and back. Usual interior cover and page toning or I'd call this VF +.  A striking copy of a great 1st Frazetta cover.
