I can't tell you how many hours I spent staring at the ASM covers especially 39 and 40. At first I was shocked...suddenly Peter Parker was handsome? I felt that after # 52 that the stories suffered a bit, but JRSR's artwork never faltered. 

One of my great moments was meeting him at an AACC banquet at SDCC. He gave me his address so that I could send him the picture I took of him and Gene Colan (there may have been someone else in the photo, but I don't remember. All my AACC photos are in floppy disc drives...someday I will need to get them converted into a viewable format). What a gentleman as well as a super nice guy. 

In his honor, I will read a couple ASM by him today (from the run listed above). 

I only have one piece of Romita Sr. original art (attached). As you can see, he did a pretty great Captain America. 

RIP Mr. Romita. 

I agree with your comments about the excellence of issues 39-52. I extend my personal list to include issues 53-56 as that is when I started collecting Marvel.

It was probably late summer of 1967 when I first laid eyes on a Spidey comic. The first two that I recall were a coverless 37 and an epic beater of a copy of 40. Both on the same day in a mound of several hundred comics that were a quarter mine, a gift from my Aunt. That day profoundly broadened my awareness ... all that dynamic inspired artwork, all at once. All the energy in those pages. Of them all, the Romita and the Kirby issues were easily my favorites, although a couple of Ramona Fradon METAMORPHO covers are also permanently etched in the gray matter. 

  I had the good fortune to meet Stan before he passed and had hoped to meet Romita at least once.... but I procrastinated. I always told myself, "next time ..." , but like the Creedence song, "Tomorrow Never Comes." Same thing happened with Kirby. 

   One thing is for sure, my childhood would have been very different without those Romita ASM's. Spidey and the FF were the first that I made a point not to miss an issue of a title. Got off my fat arse and did yard work so I could afford to snag 'em. Romita had that sophisticated style that told you this wasn't kiddy stuff. I was definitely a kid, but these comics seemed like a perfect vehicle to cruise into a more mature mindset, for some reason I wanted that. 

   Romita drew the first ASM that I ever went start-to-finish. It was #52 and my Dad had to help me read it.It was a little bit over my head, but the art pulled me through it anyway. I was a good reader by the time I started school, due largely to Marvel Comics. 

  Thank you, Mr. Romita, you were one of my heroes. I can't recall ever hearing a bad word about you.

I owned page 2 of this issue at one time. I bought it from Albert Moy in Chicago in the late 90s. Selling it is my second biggest comic art related regret. No DD on the page, but it's full of Spidey. It was the only Romita art I've ever owned.

He always looked for the best spot to sign so as not to interfere with the details of the cover artwork. This one is absolutely perfect and I’m thrilled to have it.
