ASM 6 Grade
2 2

10 posts in this topic

Hi folks I'm newish to comic books and have had some silver and bronze age Amazong Spider-Mans past down to me from my mom that she collected in her youth.  One of the most interesting is ASM #6, first appearance of the Lizard.  Qhile i have purchased a couple of slabs so far, I am new to CGC grading and will be submitting several books for grades for the first time.  The book in question has multiple color breaking spine ticks, a small color breaking crease on the bottom right, and slightly rounded edges on the front cover.  All pages are cream and present.  Pages and spine are all together.  I would welcome any opinions of what grade I can expect but I no matter the grade I am interested in getting it slabbed for long haul preservation and enjoyment.

Welcome To The Boards!!!

Minor to moderate edge/corner wear with some creasing/color loss, color breaking crease at lower right corner and top left corner, moderate spine stress with numerous color breaking spine ticks, minor to moderate staple tears, spine roll/fanned pages, discolored staples, sun/dust shadow on lower edge of front/rear covers and spine of rear cover.

VG+ 4.5

5.0 VERY GOOD/FINE (VG/FN):  Back to Top
An above-average but well used comic book. An accumulation of bindery/printing defects is allowed. Minor to moderate cover wear apparent, with minor to moderate creases and/or dimples. Inks have moderate to low reflectivity. Blunted corners are increasingly common, as is minor to moderate staining, discoloration, and/or foxing. Stamped or inked arrival dates may be present. A minor to moderate spine roll is allowed. A spine split of up to 1/2" may be present. Staples may show minor discoloration. Minor staple tears and minor stress lines may also be present, as well as minor rust migration. Paper is tan to brown with no signs of brittleness. Centerfold may be loose. Minor interior tears may also be present.

4.5 VERY GOOD+ (VG):  Back to Top
Fits the criteria for Very Good but with an additional virtue or small accumulation of virtues that improves the book's appearance by a perceptible amount.

4.0 VERY GOOD (VG):  Back to Top
The average used comic book. Cover shows moderate to significant wear, and may be loose but not completely detached. Cover reflectivity is low. Can have moderate creases or dimples. Corners may be blunted. Store stamps, name stamps, arrival dates, initials, etc. have no effect on this grade. Some discoloration, fading, foxing, and even minor soiling is allowed. As much as a 1/4" triangle can be missing out of the corner or edge; a missing 1/8" square is also acceptable. Only minor unobtrusive tape and other amateur repair allowed on otherwise high grade copies. Moderate spine roll may be present and/or a 1" spine split. Staples may be discolored. Minor to moderate staple tears and stress lines may be present, as well as some rust migration. Paper is brown but not brittle. Minor to moderate interior tears may be present. Centerfold may be loose or detached at one staple.

Thank you for your feedback!  In your opinion, would a cgc press do anything to improve this book grade-wise?

I’m at maybe a 5.0 though if that top staple is rusted you could drop from that as marvel maniac stated above. In my opinion opting for a clean and press is worth it in most cases - why not maximize the potential instead of having it slabbed and then be left wondering if you left a grade bump or 2 on the table. In this case maybe 1 grade bump is possible but there are certainly many issues that can’t be addressed. This is a really cool book and pretty neat to be inheriting it from your mom no less!

Welcome and congratulations on a nice book! This looks like a 5.0/5.5 to me. The book would definitely benefit from a clean and press. Thanks for posting.

Hi guys thanks for the feedback.  Does cgc's press service include cleaning or are there recommended cleaning and pressing services out there?  I am hesitant to send my book to a 3rd party service that I only found on the internet.

CGC (formerly CCS) does clean books before pressing. In my experience, they are not as thorough as some of the best independent cleaner/pressers out their but still ok. I think your best bet for this book would be to have CGC do the pressing, especially since it is a lower to mid grade book.
