Comics graded by CGG

116 posts in this topic

This is Daniel from the Comic Grading Group again. Sorry for the late reply to the new questions several people had. To BachelorofComix we certainly had focus groups and consulted many grading professionals in starting the company. Povertyrow, we did mean to say won’t be at Wondercon, we have nothing against Wondercon, it is an excellent convention. We will hopefully have the new website up and running by next week. Thanks to everyone for their comments and suggestions.

Hi Daniel,

Please excuse me for initially thinking you guys were a April Fools prank.

The timing and all ... just seemed like it... sorry

I have a few questions if you're answering:

1. What are the total costs for every grading tier IF you elect to buy the removable outer slab with the book? I tried to check the site several times, but I'm on a Mac and your site would not function properly (invisible text, etc.) for me whether I was using Netscape or IE.

2 a. Exactly what materials (plastics?) are the CGG "inner well?" and "removable outer slab" made of?

2 b. What is the "special paper" that seems to be like "Microchamber"? If its not, what is it and could we hear more and/or can we see the technical info/testing on it?

2 c. IF any of the storage materials are different from CGC's, or are newer archival products... what level of testing was performed and will the technical data be available soon?

3. I like options, and thought the "removable outer slab" concept was unique and interesting, but I have concerns about the safety of the books that are handled/shipped without the "removable outer slab". I wonder how protective "just" the inner well alone will be in protecting the comic? If a CGC slab is dropped, often just the outer case is damaged, not the book. If a CGG "Inner Well" is dropped on a corner.. will the comic suffer damage? Have you tried this? Also, do you feel that the "removable outer slab" will cause any submission apprehension on the more expensive books... because they are more vulnerable? Will you offer a sealed outer slab in the future?

4. Is there more information on the CGG Graders... length in the hobby, experience, etc?

5. Who is your restoration expert and his qualifications? and... what equipment will you have to help assist in detecting restoration?

Sorry if some of this is common knowledge, but I could not access the site.

Thanks in advance

At the moment, CGG will not certify resto comics. This may be the best way to send a raw comic u think may be resto & get it rejected b/c they did indeed find resto on it. CGG's website also states they are NOT grading gold or pre-1960 comics at this time. Kind of strange b/c the width of Timely's is narrower than silver DCs.

Interesting... BUT who is their restoration expert? What are his/her credentials? I suppose its a semi-moot if they send your book back with no charge if they find restoration, but I'd think that's still important for us to know, as well as what equipment they have.

Hopefully, Daniel will check in again sometime soon and shed some light on all this.

This is utter lunacy and sheer contempt of everything Holy and good in this hobby! Why are you all being supportive of ANY other grading service other than CGC? First, certain forum members are pointing fingers at CGC and Heritage for possible indescretions due to grades being changed on Heritage items as often and regularly as we change out clothes. THEN, if THAT isn't bad enough, NON-CGCed items are STILL being discussed on this Forum and auctioned on Ebay, as though they have some kind of value other than nil. These books shouldn't be discussed, they should be sent to CGC for grading and due payment of hobby royalties, or they should be confiscated and burned by the authorities as restored or deliberately misgraded by the seller merely for offering them/it withough being enclosed in a CGC holder. NOW, a NEW affrontery. An ALTERNATE grading company?? More confusion?? More royalties deflected from CGC??? Regardless of CGG's ability to grade and recognize restoration on books, whether inferior or superior to CGCs (and I have NO idea presently on their quality of service), they are NOT CGC, and ANY intent on anyone's part to NOT submit a raw book to CGC should be emphatically discouraged. I have NO idea why, it's just what I have learned from my tenure in this hobby of the pervading overriding attitude.

YO!!!

With the risk of being NARU'd by Gemma, I have to admit

to being a cross over. I was the high bidder on Ken's

Electra on Ebay. I've also sent a stack of moderns off

to CGG. We'll see in a few weeks.

The Electra 1 I bought off Ken scored a 9.4, and I wholly agree

with the grade. I believe, through recent PM with Ken, he thought

it would pull a 9.6.

I would compare it with quite a few 9.4/9.6 I have from CGC and

found 4 comics with the exact same flaws as the CGG 9.4.

Flaws were:

Bindry cut/tear at the bottom of the spine.

Bindry 'fuzzy' cut at the top of the spine.

Bindry/printing lateral scuff approx 1" long at the

bottom lower left of the front cover.

Black cover, so naturally it shows the scuff more

visibly. I compared it against an Amazing Spiderman 135,

a couple of Wolverine 1, all with the same flaws.

CGG 9.4, CGC 3ea 9.6, 1ea 9.4.

INITIAL impression is that CGG may be a little more

critical on grading. I've sent off 10 Xfactor 1"s[very white cover],

10 ea Wolverine 2,3,4,5 and we will see. If Gemma doesn't get

PO"D, I'll report back on the results. For the price difference on

moderns, I'm willing to take a chance and gamble.

As to the holder, well, I at this point prefer the CGC over the

first run of CGG, but through emails back and forth, I'm opting

in for CGG to make a stiffer holder. Granted, I'm not going to

throw either one into the bed of my pickup and drive to the

grocery store, Either one, properly and respectfully handled

should be just dandy to protect a modern comic. 893blahblah.gif

Are you saving the right half of your computer screen for something that I'm not aware of?

Yes, Bug, I am.

I'm on vacation this week and don't want to use

it all up at one time. Kinda like the carton of

cigarettes the wife buys me once a month. I

could puff away the whole carton out in the barn

in a week, but then, what would I do for the rest

of the month. I've already made the check out to

CGC, and 'course I'm broke.....

Actually I'm an old man that has vision problems,

and uses an old LARGE FONT writing program to

see what I'm typing. Then I cut and paste.

Being an old blue hair does have it's advantages

in the comic book world. I bought a nice run of

early Marvel's from the '60's new off the spinner

racks at Walgreen's for my kids when they boo.gif would

come down with the flu.

Gee... I wonder how long the Infuenza virus can

live in newsprint????????????????????????

Hmmm.........now that makes me look like Khaos......I mean.......like the worlds biggest talking turd.

You cut and paste in whatever way it's easiest for you.......and just ignore me and my big mouth...........most everyone else does. insane.gif

I was just in a Walgreen's yesterday and they don't even sell comics anymore. Now that is truly sad. frown.gif What will I buy my kids when they have the flu.....oh wait....it will probably be Yu Gi Oh, Pokemon, or Shonen Jump...I did see all of those there.

Standard procedure was to take the squalling little darlings to

Doctor Bacon, sit in the lobby reading while the wife tried to

assure the kids that no 'needles' were coming, then, after

the 'needle', a trip to get presctiptions filled, a 'fresh' jar of

Vicks vapor rub, knowing full well I was going to loose a wool

hunting sock to wrap around their little necks, 4 quart bottles

of 7-Up, 4 boxes of Kleenex, a 'fresh' jar of honey, and whatever

was left of my last $20 was blown on comic books for the

kids. I still have the FF 4, DD 1, no one liked Spiderman so

we traded them all off for a grocery bag of old Action, Superman,

and Batmans. I actually bought Mandrake the Magician for

myself.

Into the 7-up, I'd put some of the 'fresh' honey, a shot of

whatever anti-biotic and cough syrup was prescribed, and

a healthy dose of Jack Daniels, then spend the evening

reading funny books and emptying the 'pan'.

God those were the days.....
