scburdet
In all my years of collecting, I never accidentally or intentionally managed to acquire one of these variants. Perhaps b/c collectors were very aware to look for them. I was a little surprised I got this with a single bid of $4 b/c of the rarity. I think the water stains? along the top make this a bad grading option, but still curious where you'd come down on this. ROBTOTHEC
This book is not better than a 4.5 IMHO.... I was fortunate to grow up in Grand Rapids, MI and I believe we were one of the four test markets for this .30 Variant price increase. So all the Marvel titles I was buying at the time I acquired these! This is back when I would ride my Shwinn bike down to the pharmacy each Thursday to pick up the new issues for that week. I was ticked the price was going up again but had no idea what I was actually getting until later in life. While it is cool to own they are not all that rare. Just wish I had known to keep my books in pristine condition back when I was 14-15 years old. scburdet

Your story reminds me of when I started collecting riding my bike to the grocery store, which was the only place in biking distance with comics. I gave up after a few months b/c the selection was limited & inconsistent, and went to mail order from Mile High. Too bad 13/14-year-old me didn't know collectors would put a premium on those newsstand copies I was shunning. I actually split the difference between you & @morbius21 on my grade, but if I was going to lean it would be to the lower end b/c of how CGC treats stains/foxing/mold/discoloration defects. Without that, it would be a highish mid-grade copy.
LowGradeBronze
I won't go higher than 4.5 but having the price variant is pretty cool. And for $4 you did really well. scburdet

comicginger1789
The staining sucks because without it, I think a 6.5 is possible, maybe even a 7 HOWEVER, the staining is there and while I don't think it knocks it all the way down to the 4's, I do think a 5.0 or so is where it lands A great find tho and for $4 that is awesome! I also never managed to happen across these price variants and wound up paying $10 a pop for a couple Conan issues just because I felt the condition and price was right at the time (and I wanted my collection to have some representation of these variants in it) Edited November 22, 2023 by comicginger1789 scburdet

joeypost
Is the top edge of the front cover affected by the staining as severe as the back cover?
davidking623
I had a Marvel Secret Wars 8 I was the original owner of and sent in along with many of the other ones and had them graded . all came back 9.6 9.4 except the 8 which had a similar front looking cover but the stains like this book came back a 4.0 White Page . So I would guess 4.0 1950's war comics

I'd say the front & back covers are pretty comparable.
fastballspecial
I wonder if it was foxing vs staining too.

JollyComics
Mostly foxing. One stain on the top spine. I would estimate it 5.5. Without the foxing or staining, it would be 8.0 easily. scburdet
