TMNT #1 SS Question
1 1

3 posts in this topic

Hi All,

I am the proud owner of a TMNT #1 first printing (graded 6.5) and had a couple of questions that I was hoping folks on this forum could help me with.

I'm planning on attending a couple of events this year where Kevin Eastman will be in attendance and there will be CGC facilitators/witnesses on site. They would be able to crack the slab open and submit the comic for Signature Series once Kevin signs.

Cost-My first question is how much would this cost? I'm under the assumption that this would be an "Unlimited Value" submission and therefore cost 4% of the FMV for the SS submission (not to mention shipping costs, cost of signature, etc.)?

Insurance-Second question is insurance. I have collectors insurance for this comic, but am also curious what insurance my book will have while in transit and while in the possession of CGC?

SS Program-Third question is about the SS program generally. I have seen folks complain that there have been numerous mistakes with the SS program. Given the value of this comic, is this something I should realistically be concerned about? What would you do? There are very few SS TMNT #1 on the census.

Pressing Service w/ Submission-Last question is whether it would be worth it to get the book pressed through CGC in connection with the submission in hopes of getting a small grade bump. The grader notes are the following:

"Back cover small creasing breaks color/front cover small creasing breaks color/spine stress lines breaks color/top front cover moderate substance"

Seems unlikely a press would do anything to help but thought I'd ask.

Appreciate any insight folks may have!

Cost:

I don't have GPA on hand but 4% of 8-10k roughly; IIRC.

Insurance:

CI should cover the book while in transit; once CGC has it their insurance will cover it.

SS Program:

This is going to take some research on your part, talk to the facilitators that will be attending the shows and find the one that you trust with the book. If you are going to be at the convention then that would minimize any miscommunication. Since your book is a 6.5 some rough handling mishaps should be marginal.

Pressing:

From the graders notes it doesn't sound like a press would help (color breaking creasing) but it would help it lay flat and smooth any wrinkles, though might not help the grade. I would not use CGC, but some facilitators do offer pressing services in addition to facilitation.

Overall a 6.5 is a good candidate to get a signature/remarq as not much is going to affect the grade if mistakes are made in handling and a 0.5 swing is going to easier to absorb than a 9.8 dropping to a 9.4.

Thanks for the input here. Extremely helpful. I will 100% be attending the events in person. I've used the facilitator in the past for a SS grading and they've been total pros. I've looked into the insurance aspect and looks like I'll be covered for the full value every step along the way.

I'll probably skip out on the pressing since it would cost an additional 4% of the FMV and would likely not result in a grade bump or material improvement in the comic itself (while coming with the risk of damage). As it is, obtaining a signature will likely cost around $400 just for the submission (not including the fee for cracking the slab, shipping, the actual cost of the signature, etc.)

As with any high value item, as I'm sure you can understand, having it out of one's personal collection can be a bit nerve wracking.
