Storing CGC Graded Magazines - Help Needed
2 2

5 posts in this topic

Magazine Experts,

I have been buying, and compiling, CGC graded magazines.

I am trying to determine the safest way to store them.  I have a Pelican Case acquired and I have them stored (with foam) on their side with spine down within the case.  (I know spine down is -a- preferred way to store CGC graded comics.)  Is that still a safe method with magazines given their added weight and size?  I don't want a spine roll or any stress place on the spine, etc.

I can have the slabs stored horizontally and stacked within the case.  However, I would probably have 15 slabs stacked and I would be concerned about gravity impacting the bottom cases / magazines inside.

So much to think about!  Thoughts? Advice?

Thank you

I always store my graded books flat.

If you have any newly slabbed magazines, look at the inner well for warping before you decide to store flat/horizontally.  I recently won a Heavy Metal issue which has a bowled/bowed interior well.  In this specific case, there is enough contact on all four corners than a "spine down" storage approach will be the only way to store it.  I'm afraid that a horizontal storage approach would allow gravity to pull the center of the magazine into the bowl.

Quite difficult to photograph the curves....

Thank you all for the help! The links, comments, and pictures are all extremely helpful.

I elected to stay the course and keep the magazines stored horizontal with spine down.  (The inner well / warping is very much concerning as I have some magazines that look as if they could be exposed to such an issue long term.)

The horizontal storage is much more convenient for the Pelican case.  The good thing is that I could always stand the Pelican Case up and all slabs would then be laying flat within the case. (Only downside on that option is that as I place more CGC slabs within the case ... they will start to stack at a very noticeable level.  Likely 15 within the case.)
