Brian Bolland Joker Cover Commission....I can die happy!

45 posts in this topic

Hello Guys,

Anyone who knows me knows what kind of intense admirer (read: freak) I am for Brian Bolland and pretty much anything he has created. Well I have reached the collecting equivalent of Nirvana... headbang.gif

I posted my art day last week on the comic art list, then after talking to Hari and a couple others realized that I neglected to mention it here.

In any case the log jam has been broken, Brian Bolland has done his first commission piece in about a decade, and his first finished pen and ink piece in over 7 years. Spencer helped me get this done with nothing expected in return, he has my eternal gratitude and respect.

Bask in the glorious glow that is Brian Bolland working in pencil and ink and on paper once again cloud9.gif ....you can see from his creation that he has not skipped a beat, lost a step, or shed one molecule of his monstrous talent. If anything he has improved on his already immense skill.

Peace and Happy New Year....may everyone get their grail this year.

I love it!

Did you ask for this 'scene' or just ask for a commission?

I actually detailed this scene and about 95% of the details.

I actually gave Brian 3-4 different ideas.....and that same night as I was falling asleep this idea/nightmare came to me and I ran to email it to him. It was very detailed down to what the Joker was wearing, the look on his face, what he is holding in his hands, and how he is sitting. He was very excited by this concept, and it showed in the zeal he brought to the work. As well, it was a kick that my artistic hero actually liked my idea.

I described to him everything except whose heads would be on the wall. Obviously I wanted Batman and Batgirl but the rest of the heads were up to him. He was a gentleman and he was truly concerned and caring about how I felt about the finished product.

Thanks for the kind words, they are much appreciated.

Congrats on a GREAT piece.

I'm curious, what were some of the other ideas you pitched?

Thanks for the congrats....

The other ideas were more run of the mill "let's see Brian's take on a classic cover theme" type ideas. Like Robin in peril in a circus setting with Joker about to do him in and Batman coming to save him, etc.

I knew I wanted the Joker and Batman, so they all revolved around those 2 main characters....the version that was chosen was the most graphic and different from the lot of them. That says alot about Brian's sense of humor and desire to do something challenging.

Brain Bolland definitely captures the Joker the best. I was blown away when my friend found this rough sketch of the rejected cover for Wonder Woman 96. Although the printed cover of 96 is awesome, the original one he did captures the Joker's personality perfectly.
