If you could, let me know how you think it would grade structurally. And then what the actual grade is considering the back cover staining. One thing I don't understand very well is the effect something like that has on a book.

What type of stain is it? Is it oil transfer? Plus is that tear in the middle a scratch or does it go through the cover (like a hole)

 

If it is oil transfer and not a hole I'll go with a 6.5.

I'm really not sure what the stain is. The dark staining is typical foxing, the yellow staining, not sure.

 

The scratch is more of a crease than a scrape. Not a hole though.

Hmmm, well its hard for me to say then. Oil transfer is no problem for the grade. But if it is something else it hurts this book big time. Is it just on the cover? Any soaking on the inner pages?

Just on the cover. It doesn't present as moisture damage. Matter of fact, its hard to even notice it from the inside of the cover.

I would say 7.5 structurally. Only a few spine stresses and a couple small thumb dents.

 

The BC staining appears to be foxing, in which case the grade would remain about the same, maybe drop to 7.0. Can you post a larger scan?

Looks like foxing. I think it's a 7.5.

 

When you posts scans that large, defects tend to be exaggerated. That's a sharp copy.
