WHO ARE SOME OF THE WORST DEALERS

279 posts in this topic

in my mail order experience, some of the worst ive dealt with

have been

daniel dupcak and henry moses jnr of fantazia, NY, - around in the late 80's and early 90's, now defunct- can u say OVERGRADE, UNDISCLOSED RESTORATION AND REFUSING REFUNDS BY LYING THAT RETURNED COMIC WAS DAMAGED

gerry ross : "the comic master", can u say OVERGRADE.

steve fishler of metropolis in the early 90's -OVERGRADE, bought a supposed nm/mt surfer 4 in the early 90's to have the package arrive with an invoice stating, this is actually a nm+ comic (and it was imo a vfnm), well you COULDVE TOLD ME U CHANGED THE GRADE B4 SENDINGTHE FUKKA SO I WOULDVE SAID PLEASE DONT SEND IT THEN

i must say since vincent came on board, the service has improved tremendously

some others which were average

tony starks - "silver age specialist", poor packing, left out books on the order, to his credit tried to remedy the situation but painful, wouldve been easier if it was right the first time

others' experiences??

I couldn't agree with you more about collector83aw. I've bought from him on several occasions and he was great each time. Then, last June, I bought 4 books from him, and never received them. At first he called me and said one of the books had a crack in it and he was going to send it back to CGC and he would send them all once that was done. So, since I had previously dealt with him and he extended the courtesy of phoning me and explaining the situation, I trusted him to send them to me when that book came back. About 2 months later he told me it had still not come back but he would give me a way bill number to prove that he would send them.

So I waited... confused.gif

And waited... confused.gif893frustrated.gif

Until about 4 months after the fact, when he stopped answering my emails. To this day, he will not answer my emails. This guy should be avoided at all costs. 893censored-thumb.gif

He may look to have some good deals, but remember, if it looks to good to be true, it probably is. rantpost.gif

Daniel Dupchak (Fantazia) resto comics being resold by big-name Chicago con dealers without full disclosure b/c that was the only way to liquidate triple-trimmed books: trimmed on ALL 3 sides of the Marvel key to "freshen" up the appearance. makepoint.gif

Robert Crestohl (b4 he joined Gerry Ross, Comic Master from Montreal, Canada). Silver Surfer 1 vfnm with a 1 inch tear on the front cover. Then again this was around 1975 when grading was looser, but NOT that loose. 893naughty-thumb.gif

gerry ross : "the comic master", can u say OVERGRADE.

Never have I been so disappointed as I was about 10 years ago when I naively sent him $$$ for some books, and to get 10% off I listed "alternate" choices, which, inevitably, were the books I received - and they were overgraded!

Not to be dissuaded by the lure of VF/NM early/mid-Silver Age Marvels at 50% off, I tried again, which led me down this path of much pain and discomfort. To read even more fun-filled bashing of "One Million Ripoffs", click here.

Ok, now I feel better...

Fantazia - trimmed "NM" ASM 28 and FF 16 that I paid BIG bucks for (well, big bucks then)

I've been lucky - never really had a bad experience from dealers per se.

I Bought a spidey 129 off ebay about 2 years ago from 1,000,000 comix. Thought it was a great deal buy it now of like $70 for what was supposidly a VF- copy. I thought what a great deal 893naughty-thumb.gif

I got the book in a timley manor and low and behold what do I find on the cover? A pen mark all on spidey chest, and not just a small tiney pen mark either. Looked like what a little kid would do with like 4-5 circles all over cover on spidey chest with a blue pen 893whatthe.gif

needless to say non of this disclosed in the item description and the picture was so small that you couldnt see it in the pic, and being it was such a "Good Deal" I didnt want to lose out by asking for a bigger pic of the book.

Live and learn I guess

I bought a nm/nm late silver Doom Patrol issue from Ross on Ebay. The book was beautiful, but it took him a month to send it to me after I paid using Paypal the day after the auction ended. I left him neutral feedback, and he replied with a negative, claiming my charge card was declined. I learned never to leave neutral feedback again, and will always leave negatives if I'm not happy. Still my only neg on Ebay...

I'm really surprised about Dr Ross and his partner. I've been buying from them since the mid-70s and have NEVERhad a bad transaction from them. Worst ebay transaction from a dealer was with Lou Manna(NYC) who evidently cant tell the difference between Fine and Fair and mistakenly shipped Media Mail when Priorty was paid for.

What's the deal here? A thread about worst dealers, and nobody has mentioned Chuck yet? 893frustrated.gif

Chris

Yeah chuck is pretty horrible but people still buy from him even at his 5-6x inflated overgraded prices. The fact is he's a pretty smooth businessman despite all the collectors who despise him. He jacks up the price and is willing to let his inventory sit because he knows that he'll always have a certain percentage of sales for all his books no matter what. Most dealers don't have the luxury or space to buy in huge quantities that he does to let the inventory sit at premium prices.

True, JonnyD....But, they are the worst I've dealt with.

I was out of the hobby before I had the dough to drop on all those wonderful Crestohl/Ross books that were advertised in the late 80's/early 90's, so I dodged that bullet.

Once I returned to the hobby, I was lucky enough to find some really good dealers (props to Bob, Superworld, and Mark N.), and some really good guys on this board (Darth, Banner, House, Ariach, Donut for my back issue fix, and Chrom for my eclectic tastes)....Sorry if I left anybody out!

yea, chuck is pretty bad but I don't purchase books expensive enough from him to really lodge too bad of a complaint because I tested him with less expensive books to see how his grading was. But one can't help but think with such a vast inventory why he doesnt have any better of a cgc selection than he does. Perhaps its the obvious: all his books are overgraded anyway so he upsells them or 2. he has lotsa hg silver/bronze he is sitting on. the problem with that train of that is we all know how greedy he is, with as high of prices are the low grade cgc's he is pushing right now, one would think he would have sent in most of his hg stuff by now?

I would also like to add Lone star comics to my list of bad dealers

On the topic of Chuck, in CBG #1541 (out today) he writes: "I’ve known Bob Overstreet personally for more than 25 years and have been utilizing his price guide for 33 years."

What does he use it for? A bong stand?
