Question about original art

3 posts in this topic

Hello all,

I am new to this form and collecting original art work and just have a few questions.

When buying a sketch, how can you confirm that the sketch is authentic?

This is my issue, I love David Finch's work, and saw this Captain America sketch on ebay: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...A%3AIT&rd=1

Then I saw this on CAF, looks like the same sketch, but the some places on this sketch that are not darken: http://www.comicartfans.com/GalleryPiece.asp?Piece=140412&GSub=20940

I am not sure what questions to ask or what?

Thanks for all you help everyone!

Well, there's a chance that this is just a standard "quickie sketch" that Finch does for just about everyone...(you'll notice the CAF sketch is dated, the eBay sketch is not)...

And to be honest, the sketch isn't very nice...his head looks misshapen...but to answer your question, unless you get the sketch directly from the artist there's no way to be sure. However, I will add that I doubt anyone would "copy" that sketch...it just doesn't seem worth it to do so. Some artists are "faked" more than others, and these tend to be more expensive artists like Charles Schulz.
