Washington, DC, JUNE 7, 2006 - Just in time for the release of Bryan Singer's long-awaited SUPERMAN RETURNS, the Smithsonian's Resident Associate Program presents an exciting panel celebrating and examining the role of superheroes in popular culture.

 

Superhero authorities DANNY FINGEROTH, DENNIS O'NEIL, MICHAEL USLAN, and TOM DeFALCO are the panelists. DR. ARNOLD T. BLUMBERG, curator of Geppi's Entertainment Museum, will be the moderator.

Superman on the Couch: What Superheroes Really Tell Us About Ourselves and Our Society

Thurs., June 22, 7 to 9 p.m.

 

From legends of the Olympian gods to the modern mythology of Superman and Spider Man, stories of superhuman heroes have always fascinated mankind. With this summer’s SUPERMAN RETURNS, our love affair with these bigger-than-life characters continues. What’s behind the fascination with them? Join comics industry veterans and superhero experts Danny Fingeroth, Dennis O’Neil, Michael Uslan, and Tom DeFalco for a lively exploration of superheroes and society.

 

Fingeroth ran Marvel Comics’ Spider-Man editorial line and is the author of Superman on the Couch: What Superheroes Really Tell Us About Ourselves and Our Society (Continuum). O’Neil, an expert on comics, pop culture, and folklore/mythology, was the guiding force behind DC Comics’ Batman. Uslan, an Emmy Award-winning writer and producer, is executive producer of the Batman films. DeFalco, former Marvel editor in chief, is the author of Spider-Man: The Ultimate Guide.
