bindery tears on 80's marvels

6 posts in this topic

Does a bindery tear keep a book from reaching the 9.6 range and higher. Alot of my marvels from the 80's seem to have this problem. here are some examples. Bottom left corner on front cover, can really see the tear on the back.

I think u got lucky with Cgc at 9.6, 9.8. If it was a bronze Marvel, it would have garnered Cgc 9.0 from my submission experience. Else I just have bad luck. tongue.gif

Ya, I would've conidered it being lucky if I had been the submitter...unfortunately I was the buyer and couldn't see it in the scan.

I was sort of surprised CGC allowed this type of defect in that grade. The size and extenet of the bindery tear may also be part of it. The one on mine isn't huge, but does look a lot like the example on the Avengers book.

It happens to be one of my books I have here in Japan with me, so I just pulled it out to look it over again (I don't have a scanner here, but tried to take some pics - they didn't turn out good enough to show the details).

Funny thing about this book is that it not only has the lower bindery tear, but also one at the top left corner. I personally would not have given it the 9.8 grade with those two tears, but there it is in a 9.8 holder.

9.8 can be an interesting grade. Many of mine have no discernable flaw whatsoever and I can't understand why it's not considered mint, then there are those that have very small defects (usually in the corners) that slip by. I've even seen the smallest of creases get by. Hopefully when I get back to the states I can get all my books scanned and show some examples of what I'm talking about.
