Hey POV... You see this auction?

18 posts in this topic

I know absolutely nothing about these... But I sure hope I find a couple in the attic...

Wow, that's a lot of money...

Some intersting things there all right! Now I have to wonder who can frame and display a 24-sheet? lol. I think the framing would have to be contracted to be done inside the final hanging place!

VERY interesting stuff though.

but POV why would he sell them as one lot???

Also read his descriptions about "better printers" used on the 24 sheets than the usual onesheets because of the much better quality and detail of the artwork and figures.

BALDERDASH. Theyre sharper on the 24 sheet cause theyre so much bigger and being described/printed out of so many more dots!!!

This kind of salesmanship worries me about the whole deal....

To be honest, my experience ends with 3-sheets! There ARE a coupe of things that bother me. First the diversity of things. Silent to King Kong to the more familar 50's sci-fi. Second, any knowledgeable seller would break these out because they would have a broader market targeting the specialists. Silent, 30's and 50's. They CAN be a pretty diverse group and it is really singling people out who would want not only want 50's sci-fi but also silent sci-fi.

My apologies for the terse reply above. Yes, this auction troubles me. Will seek out my poster newsgroups and see if any scutlebutt is on!

What do they mean by 24-sheet? Is that just 24 individual images pasted together to form the larger image? If so, they look pretty good.......but, man.....they are HUGE. 893whatthe.gif

A 24-sheet covers an area approximately 8 feet high x 19 feet - they CAN vary in saize, especially with the times. They are basically billboard size. VERY limited market but those who want them usually can pay.

a 24-sheet is literally equal in size to 24 individual onesheets/posters of 27x41" each. Its not 24 sheets of paper, as a three-sheet is just two not three--a 27x41" and a 54x41" And final assembled size is smaller than the sum of the sheets due to the overlapping.

Exactly right! But they can vary a bit over the years. Now what folks have to realize is we are talking "squares" - so a 24 sheet is approximately 4 one-sheets wide by 6 one sheets deep. Approximately. smile.gif

squares or rectangles?

Squares as in "squared" - as in 24 one-sheets squared, so to speak. Or not really. I don;t know. Squared is probably wrong. I mean 4 wide by 6 deep so you multiply 4x6 and you get 24. So maybe "multiples" is more accurate than "squares". ::Phew - sometimes you folks are dastardly in your precision!::

Win a 7-figure lottery after taxes. Buy a house that makes the drawing room in Bride Of Frankenstein look miniscule. Buy a framing company? grin.gif

Wow, that's a lot of money...

It sure seems like a lot of money at first but then I glance over to the "# of bids" section. It is at this point that I am hit with a dose of reality:

NO ONE IS GOING TO SPEND $550K ON 7 OLD POSTERS!!!!!!!

I don't think anyone is going to spend the money on this particular set, especially since 24 sheets are basically very expensive novelty items, but, there are a couple of posters that I could think of that would easily challenge that figure by themselves. One of them is actually owned by a poster on this board.

I have a feeling they are viewing this listing as advertising...

They know no one will buy the set intact, but if they can sell one of the posters privately as a result of the auction, that's great. So you spend $23 on a listing and field emails and phone calls about the individual pieces...

I'm sure they WOULD sell if someone bid the 550K, and eBay would love the $7K in final value fees. But I doubt that was the plan here.

Probably not on ebay but that has already been well exceeded in real life. After all, it IS only 78.5K per poster, and several times that has already been paid for individuals like Frankenstein, Dracula, The Mummy etc.

I did once: an original 1-sheet to Lon Chaney Sr HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME. We were renovating the attic of my then-100 year old house (I was about 11-12 at the time) and found it rolled up. Was quite nice. Looked like it had been there since 1923. I loved it until my mother decided to clean out my "junk cabinet".
