POLL: CGC Forum Philanthropy

Why don't we all donate "raw" books, and ask CGC if they will donate the "slabs".

Comics for kids is to promote literacy! tongue.gif

I edited my last post. Like I said......Send "reader's copies" to the kids, and "slab" HG books for us "grown-ups" smirk.gif

Dam,

All these are good ideas but we are reaching the multiple options stage. What generally happens then is the forum slowly starts to disappear up its' own arse. At present we have "donating cash", "donating raw books" "auctioning HG books on ebay" etc Let's decide on one approach and then go for it. So maybe we run ideas for a day or two put them all in a poll and then select the idea that gets the most votes.

I regularly donate full long and short boxes to comics 4 kids. You can get a long box of modern stuff for like 25 cents an issue.

Donated 100 dollars to the CBLDF last year, but that was the only time for that. And it just cause I read a Wizard article about some company trying to beat up on this independant creator.

Anyways, I'd suggest doing the long box suggestion..that way you KNOW the money goes to comics.

I donate a fair amount to CBLDF already... which is only right since I sell porn in my shop. tongue.gif

I also donate 5,000-10,000 comics every year to charities, and have been involved with literally dozens of charities in the last several years. My wife is a member of AFP (formerly NSFRE) so I have a lot of contacts in the fundraising industry. Since she has been a Development Director of several different organizations during her career, including American Cancer Society, I know far more about philanthropy than I ever care to. I don't make a move regarding a charity without studying their 990's first...

That said, I would be more than willing to contribute, on some level, to a group donation from the forum... I would be more interested in CBLDF than in ACTOR at the present time, mostly because ACTOR has accomplished very little in the way of its mission at this point. I have no doubt that they will make great strides over time, but they have made little progress so far. In their first fiscal year, they took in $12,190 in contributions, paid out $16,635 in expenses (including $7,985 in professional fees), and did not distribute a single dollar in benefits to the artists they support. I am not suggesting anything about the long-term good of the organization, merely observing that they are not yet accomplishing their chartered mission.

The CBLDF, in its last fiscal year, took in $113,688 in direct support, and paid out $75,617 fulfilling its mission. The organization's expenses were higher than the $38,071 difference, but are supplemented by the sale of merchandise (t-shirts, prints, comics, etc.). It still spends more on fundraising than an organization should, but given the limited mass appeal of the message, their operating costs are in line.

Regardless of which organization the forum goes with, you can count me in...

they accept donations of comic books to give to kids, promote the industry and encourage literacy.

I am all for the ideals that comics4kids stand for, and comic charities in general.

For my part, I often donate new comics that I've read to young relatives and childrens charities/libraries/doctors waiting rooms etc. Basically, anywhere that kids might pick up a book and read it. I have also started to give away various low dollar older books to the same kind of places. I find doing this far more rewarding than selling books I no longer want for a small amount of money.

Dam, its a great idea in principle to donate money to comics charities. For me though, I find the reward comes from passing on books that I have purchased and no longer want and seeing an end product (kid enjoying a comic book), rather than sending money.

Hmmm..... that got me thinking about the Ages of Porn, but to paraphrase LH from another thread:

I am as guilty as the next guy... In my shop, the PORN is sorted by Age, and signage behind the Silver Age Porn indicates that you will find PORN from 1956 to 1970 there... The signage behind the Bronze Age Porn indicates you will find PORN from 1971-1979... But those signs are a seller's convenience, not the stamp of cultural observation. The signs breaking down the remaining decades describe all the PORN as Modern... Modern 1980-1989 and so on...

Guys thanks for all the interest and support thus far!

Right now it seems like we have 2 people north of $100, 6 from 25-50, 7 from 1-25 and 3 others that want to participate! grin.gif

Using House's number's:

ACTOR . . . took in $12,190 in contributions . . . The CBLDF, in its last fiscal year, took in $113,688 in direct support

If we put together even $500 on behalf of the forums it would be a very noticeable and appreciated contribution to either charity!!

Off to bed now, but tomorrow I will spend a little time getting a battle plan and submitting it for comments and suggestions!

Why don't we all donate "raw" books, and ask CGC if they will donate the "slabs".

We can send the children tons of comics to READ, and "slab" a bunch of HG books to sell on Ebay.

This is a great idea you guys are doing! The idea of CGC donating the slabs has been done before over at PCGS. Back a few months after 9/11 a few members got PCGS to slab a bunch of NY state quarters with a special insert. They then held auctions on EBAY and all prcoceds went to the 9/11 fund. Both COIN WORLD and NUSMATIC NEWS did a write up on this to help spread the word.

I am going to put up a post on the coin side to see if anyone can remember more or to refer the people that were involved in this to this post. CHRIS

Perhaps those that can afford to donate money can do that, and those who can only afford to donate some books for the kids can do that. This gives more people a chance at being a part of things. I realize it doubles the effort, but speaking as someone who can't really give any money, I know I have books and I'd love to be able to participate. Just a thought for those of us who are lower on the earnings ladder.

One Thousand Dollars One Thousand Books

Objective: The CGC Forum Members will attempt to raise $1K for either ACTOR of CBLDF (to be determined by Forum poll next week) concurrently trying to raise 1K books for Comics 4 Kids.

Immediate Action Items:

1 - Continue to gauge interest in CGC Forum Members to participate in this endeavor, currently monitored via posts and the poll (dam60)

2 - Decide what charity the Forum will sponsor with monetary gifts (poll to come early next week, dam60)

3 - Establish contact with the said charities and alert them of incoming donations. Establish a start and end date to make donations of books and cash. (dam60)

Initiatives:

1 - Solicit possible corporate sponsorship through matching gifts / outright donations. I am sure that we can get some nice coverage in Scoop (via Tom G), CBG (I can write a letter, maybe even get Brent or Maggie to write an article on it), Wizard, and perhaps even the monthly Overstreet if it is deemed appropriate material. The free publicity could be a good pull to get some nice corporate donations.

2 - Obtain donations from CGC that could be auctioned to raise money for the fund. Perhaps CGC would be kind enough to donate ten free economy submissions, ten free modern submissions, a free grading guide, etc. These could then be auctioned off directly via CGC, the said charity, or via a Forum member

This is a quick rough draft.

Thoughts? Additions?

Sounds good to me....

A list of who donated would be nice.

Not the amount or what they donated just the fact they donated. Acknowledgments are always nice.

I'll be happy to donate both. I've got several raw books that I enjoyed and can for sure pass them along.
