And we're back to the old labels...former copy.  Also this cover utilizes dialogue balloons...not seen on a Spidey cover since issue 4 if I'm not mistaken...

Yesterday's post had dialogue balloons. 

Not to revisit earlier discussions, but cover explanatory dialogue is to me is another "dividing line" or perhaps represents the transition period between Silver and Bronze. Fantastic Four went #22 - #98 without word balloons.  For FF that happened in May 1970 and of course this book is August 1970.  It looks to me like an editorial decision to move in this direction, as opposed to artists changing their presentation styles - it takes a couple of years for dialogue to show up on almost every cover.  Later on, the cover dialogue becomes more hyperbolic with lots of "I'll fight until I die" or "if we fail, the Earth will be destroyed" and the like.  To me, that kind of hyperbole is full-on Bronze.

Doh ...well you're right and that started out what would almost become mandatory word/thought balloons on the front covers...through issue 200...86, 87, 88, 90, 91, 92, 93, 96, 98, 101, 107, 111, 112, 114, 116 (think this is the most with 5 balloons), 117, 118, 119, 121, 122, 123, 124, 125, 126, 127, 128, 131, 132, 133, 134, 136, 137, 139, 141, 142, 143, 144, 145, 146, 147, 148, 149, 150, 151, 152, 153, 154, 156, 157, 158, 159, 160, 162, 163, 164, 165, 166, 168, 169, 170, 171, 172, 173, 174, 175, 176, 178, 179, 180, 182, 183, 187, 189, 192, 193, 198 and 199...whew...

In all of the years that I've collected these, I never really paid attention to the fact that AF 15, ASM 1, 3 and 4 had them, and then they vanished completely until that point that they came back. I've just always been too busy making fun of the stupid ones.

I can picture a couple tho.

ASM 14 "The Goblin will never see me clinging to the ceiling of this cavern!" "That's what you think Arachnid!"  "What the Goblin Wants, the Goblin Gets!"

#4 is the all-time best cover for dialogue/exchange...and a 4-panel one-off to boot!
